Hi I am new to Building slant sizes and just bought a 72 duster with a 225 slant. Wanting to get 300 horse out of her, just wanted to know what the best add-ones I should add to it. I was think 4barrel intake will 500 cfm edlebrock, with dual headers, wiseco pistons, over bore, deck reduction, new cam, and balance shaft, haha any advice or any better advice?
Thanks! Much appreciated! And love the site!

Hello and welcome!
Starting a project with a horsepower goal is fun and seductive, but not always the best route.
As many slanters have discovered, it's better to figure out what you want to do with the vehicle, then design the engine to match your needs.
Will this be a full time race vehicle? Or will it spend half its time on the road? Or will it spend almost all its time on the road, with only an occasional blast down the track?
What type of driving do you do? Lots of highway, lots of stop and go, or both? Is this a weekend car, or a daily driver?
300 HP is possible on a slant, but requires serious planning and investment. Take your time, look around the board and the articles posted, and decide exactly what you want to do before you buy your first part. It will save you tons of $$$ and aggravation, and you'll be much happier with the results.
Have Fun!

| Thanks for responding so quickly! And this is going to be my daily driver but I will occasionally take it down the track! And any tips on what parts to buy and which ones not to buy would be appreciated! Thanks

As a daily driver, you might want to consider decent fuel economy as one of your goals.
There are many routes, and several folks will chime in here. A lot of this depends on your budget.
Tell us more about what shape the vehicle is in, what your daily commute is like, and what kind of cash you are looking at spending.
Brakes and handling come before major engine mods... is this a disc brake vehicle? How are the bushings, ball joints, etc?
From there you could do anything from a rebuild with higher compression and a Super Six conversion (very well mannered) right up through to something wild. You could also do a nice street build, then add NOS to get that extra oomph when you're on the track.

| You'll also want carb heat if you're driving it in winter... which means your headers should actually be Dutra Duals or some other option that provides heat to the intake.

Yes I would love to get decent mpg, the lady who I bought it from was the first and only owner and she has records of mpg reports and reports of every time she filled up, she averaged right around 19-20 mpg which isn't bad but I know there a better way to get more mpg and more HP.
The cars on awesome condition, I just resurfaced the brake drums and I'm going to rebuild the suspension or just replace with newer suspension components. It's got power steering and Manuel brakes which I don't mind.
I'm only 16 and my budget is as much as I make at work so about 2 or 3 grand on engine and 1 grand on suspension, just think when you where 16 , haha any advice is appreciated!
Thanks guys very much for helping me, I'm in love with this site and hope it stays up!

Have you gone through the FAQ in this section, including the Engine Build matrix?
If you hit the Home button, there will be an Articles section. There's a lot of info in there as well.
Take a deep breath, keep your money in your wallet for a tad longer, and look at the options first. Unlike building a V8, throwing money and parts at a slant rarely has the desired effect. Everything has to match up just so, or the build can be less than satisfying.
I haven't talked to anybody that runs a Thermoquad. I think it's come up a time or two over beers at the track, but nobody has posted up about trying one yet. (There might be a post on here somewhere about it, but I haven't seen that post.)
