I tired the jaw style and while it worked it was definitely not convenient. I think the "C" clamp style would be easier to use. The way the jaw worked is it catches the spring on either side and then is drawn up by tightening the screw. The "C" clamp style come under the head is lined up with the valve and then the cage pushes down around the spring. My only concern would be the tension on the spring is not being held after removing the valve clips.

The jaw ones are for doing seals without removing the head. For doing valve jobs and such with the head off the C clamp style is tons better.

A long piece of metal with the end notched and a hole drilled to bolt it to the head. Use it like a lever to push spring down.
