Post subject: Posting Pictures on this Website (Mon Mar 17, 2003 9:11 pm) Reply with quote

Pictures contained in posts are actually not resident in this website. They are actually stored on another computer (server) somewhere on the internet. When you want to add a picture to your post, you must:

1. have your picture hosted on a server somewhere (not this one). I personally have a business website, which is hosted on a server, and use this to store my pictures. Many internet service providers allow people to create a small personal website and this could be used to mount your pictures. Chat with them about your options and how you'd do it. This will need to be your personal learning.

2. add directions (address) within your post on how to get to that server and then to where on that server that picture is stored. On this site, you write the directions ussing 'BBCode'. The basic BBCode formula is as follows:

'[img]http:www.-enter url (server name) here-/-directions to picture[/img]

For example, in my case, my server's url is:
'projectplato.com' .
On this server, I have a folder named:
'cars'
and in this folder I have another one named:
'Images'.
and in this folder I have a picture in the 'jpg' format labeled:
'manifoldonengtn'.
The BBcode would then look like this:

[img]http ://www.projectplato.com/cars/Images/manifoldonengtn.jpg[/img]
NOTE: I have deliberately left a space after the 'p' and before the colon so that the text will stay visible. Now I take out the space and . . .

. . . the formula goes and gets the picture and displays it on your screen.

If only a small box is displayed, it means that the formula can't find a picture at the end of the path you specified.
[img]http ://www.projectplato.com/cars/Images/manifoldoffengtn.jpg[/img]

The problem here is I have no picture called 'manifoldoffengtn.jpg'. My posted BBCode formula went looking and didn't find one.

Happy Learning.

You need photo processing software, you computer most likely has something on it that can resize a image.
Here are a couple of smaller versions of your photos:

If your computer doesn't have image editing software, you can save a couple hundred bucks by learning to use Gimp. Information can be found here:

http://www.gimp.org/

Gimp is a very powerful tool, and It's free!! It works on Windows or Mac.

It took me a few days to read some of the documentation and realize that you actually have to install 2 programs to make it work. First install gtk, then install gimp. I have been using gimp for about 4 years. It's great for converting to different formats and compressing and resizing images.

Also worth noting that while many servers and most browsers support spaces in filenames, this board doesn't seem to; an underscore in it's place solves the problems.

Post subject: Keep trying (Sat Apr 15, 2006 7:27 am) Reply with quote

No harm in trying. The previous image did not work because the "gallery" site is not designed for image hosting.

Instead, a link to the site would allow people to go to your image gallery on the other website. The program that creates the gallery pages doesn't allow for direct access to the images from outside sites. This is a common use of the PHP language to prevent people from using their website for something they did not intend.

You'll notice that the link doesn't point to an image, but rather a webpage.

the page is named "main.php" and all of the information after the question mark is special information which tells the web page what picture to display.

In order to use a web address with the image tags, it must end in one of the supported image formats such as .jpg .gif .tif .png

This may help some people better understand what they are doing in the future. Good luck and keep trying because good pictures can make this website much more interesting and helpful.

yes its a problem with gallery2--its actually a security feature. It prevents people from linking to your gallery pictures without your permission. Sadly it also prevents you from doing the same. There is a workaround using urlrewrite and some other stuff, but I've not spent the time to figure it out. You can link directly to the subgallery, but not a specific picture.
