Do I need to buy a different ignition coil to convert to electronic ignition?

1970 dodge dart, contact point ignition.

It's not a good idea to use the stock coil.

how much better is switching to HEI as opposed to mopar EI. Which is cheaper and how much does HEI improve the cars performance?

Ok, I will take the bait...... after reading the suggested threads many times over the past 12 months, how much does the GM HEI improve the cars performance over the Orange MOPAR ECU?

My NGK UR4 plugs run a nice light cinnamon and it rarely skips a beat at idle. Using the Chromes Blaster 2 coil, 8mm wires, BlueStreak cap and M0-3000 rotor. It is and animal off idle.

So why change?
Is it for emissions reasons?
fewer hydrocarbons?
better mileage?
or does it last longer?
easier on the components so they last longer?
????

The HEI readily supports larger plug gaps, which means better driveability and mileage with reduced emissions. Also no ballast resistor, which means a failure point is eliminated. It's not that the Mopar system is at all bad, it's that HEI is better.

Also, while good Chrysler-style ECUs can still be had from the likes of Standard/BlueStreak and Echlin, all of the Mopar/Chrysler-sourced ECUs (Orange, chrome, gold, black, whatever) have been junk for several years now. Finest "Most Favored Permanent Normal Trading Partner" Chinese quality. :roll:

Dan,

Do they sell the orange and chrome versions? or just the stock version.
If they sell the performance versions, such as the chrome or orange ECU,
would you have part numbers for them?

Orange/chrome/gold is a Mopar-brand-only deal, largely a scam (the "differences" in these modules are more or less confined to the colour of the housing and the price) and—again—they're none of them worth spending money on (from Summit or anyone else), because quality is unreliably poor.

If you are sticking with the Mopar-style system, the performance from a Standard BlueStreak LX-100 (5-pin) or LX-101 (4-pin) or Echlin equivalent is as good as you can get.

Thanks for the American part numbers Dan.

I had purchased my Orange Box from Summit and was wondering about the quality. Everything is new under hood from the painting the engine bay with the new Concept Series bright yellow while the motor was out, down to most of the wiring harness, wiper motor, radiator, etc. and of course the new engine build.

If wanted to run a test between both the stock MOPAR System and the HEI conversion, what would be the best HEI module and part# to buy?

It seems that I could easily jumper around the ballast resistor and unplug the ECU and plug in the HEI for a few months to see if I can document the differences.

I completely agree. With the tech. advances today the question isint really why? its more like why not? I have a few mopar boxes on the shelf and they are definatly not the same as the originals (same look & part# but different feel to the metal and I dont know why but the new ones feel a little lighter to me. Maby it is just me I duno)
