...Engine is almost done and I did final checks on the camshaft that came from the 225 and this is what came up:

intake opening: 20 degree BTDC
intake fully opened: 112-118 degree ATDC
intake closed: 85 degree BTDC

exhaust opening: 127 degree ATDC
exhaust fully opened: 109-100 degree BTDC
exhaust closed: 30 degree ATDC

You should loosen the valve lash to .016 intake and .024 exhaust and do your degree testing / measurements again.
I say this because the intake valve duration shown above comes out to 295 degrees and that does not look right. You may-be measuring some of the lash ramp.

Intake valve closing (IC) is the most important valve event so make sure that reading is correct.
I look at the IC as a ABDC number.
Most SL6 cams have an IC between 45 and 65 degrees ABDC... you show yours at 95 ABDC.
180 - 85 = 95

Next thing to review is the cam's "phasing" to the crankshaft but let's wait on reviewing that until we get some better measurement with looser lash settings.

DD I took the risk and put the engine in with this unknown cam.
After experiencing some ignition problems and ending up replacing the ICU, the engine started well, keeps rpm steady and goes into higher revs promptly. The only strange thing I noted is idle vibration which is more noticable than with the previous 198 crank.
I will be testing and readjusting it over next weeks and share some more videos / photos on the forum.

On this occasion I would like to thank everyone who helped me along the way :)))

Yeah, that is super cool! Enjoy the cruising. EFI Slant 6s are very rare, and usually fun to drive...

What remains to do (mechanical):
- valve hot readjustment
- fuel evaporation cannister refurb (still looking for fuel resistive foam)
- carb fine tune
- front suspension full geometry adj + joint greasing
- new battery and starter cables installaction
- rear axle check and new oil

So the happines about the engine rebuilt didn't last long. Not even done 50 Miles and knocking developed around the rear side. Firstly I suspected trainny or the converter as the knocking stopped when on drive or reverse but subsequently I suspect the 6th cylinder rod bearing failure. But why would it fail? Oil pump was reused from 198 as it was within specs. Maybe the chamfer on the first crank bearing I did for cam chain oiling was too wide reducing oli pressure in the crank on the last 6 cyl rod? Any ideas?

Don't lose hope yet!

Has the oil pressure changed? If you do not have a good oil pressure gauge, install one immediately. See what it is around idle (say 800 RPM or pick a little higher like 1000 RPM), then see what it is at 2500 RPM in neutral. Record those numbers and see if they change over time or as the knocking changes. They will be higher when the engine is cold and lower when engine is warmed up.

It is also very likely this is the flexplate to torque converter bolts (easy to check and/or loctite) or the flexplate to crankshaft bolts (harder to check/tighten). I always use red loctite on these and overtorque them a little.

Hope this helps and let us know what you find!

Lou

Thanks a lot for this clue. It turned out to be the flex plate to converter bolts gone loose. Now tightened with red loctite and so far so good.

I checked the oli pressure anyway and these how it came up: (RPM/PSI)
cold
390/25
450/30
700/45
800/47

well warm
500/34
580/39
600/42
700/43
2500/45
5000/47
6000/48
7000/48
8000/48

hot
550/34
650/38
750/40
800/41
900/41
1000/42
1400/42
1500/43
2000/45
2500/45
500/29
600/32
700/37
800/40

I hope the above looks good, but please let me know if you see any issues.

On the other hand I noticed idle is not perfectly stable. Tried to adjust idle screws on the BBD as per the book but with no results. The carb is remanufactured from rockauto. Will this be carb readjusting job?

Another question - after engine gets warmed up, a not so loud but consistent with rpm clang noise developes in the area of fuel pump. my fuel pump is reused but in fair condition. would this be typical for fuel pump or should I look for other reasons? I.e. camshaft/rods/lifters?

thank you:)

"Remanufactured" carburetors are virtually always junk; it is often impossible to make them run well.

Unbolt the fuel pump and pull it away from the block. Start the engine. Has the noise gone away?

Dan, beeing located in Poland my ability to check a few junk yards for a good carter bbd dedicated for slant six is limited. Maybe you have one you could sell or know someone who could?

Thanks a lot, Rad.

Oh man! I hope you never have to ever pull the tranny or motor!

Oil pressure looks good to me.
As Dan said remove the pump and check the arm action, it might be defective there.

BTW is it possible my slant reached 8000 rpm on a carter BBD or my instrument is faulty?

No way 8000 RPM. You may have it set to "4 cyl" and you were actually revving 6000. That is still high for a 225 with a BBD...

Oil pressure looks great!

Lou

Sorry, didn't mean to seem like I was disparaging your choice of carburetor—I meant to point out that it is a likely culprit for this what you are experiencing.

I'm out of new carburetors appropriate for your car, or I'd offer.
