Post subject:  Oil pump mods worked!

This post is more of just an update on a project that Ryan has going on.

His 72 Dart is getting restored and the engine that will be going into it is pictured below. It is the Big bore Slantkoda engine (Over 258 CI I think). For testing it has my 600 carb on it, but it will be getting a fuel injection system and a blower in the car. Anyway, he has a modified oil pan that will hold 10 quarts and we did some modifications to the oil pump which we thought would work , but were not at all sure.

Basically the oil pick up tube was eliminated completely. (Nothing to crack or break off) A new Moroso pick up was installed in the pan and exits near the bottom, passenger side of the pan, just behind the oil pump. Then the oil pump was modified. 1st the inlet port of the pump was plugged. Then a 12 AN fitting was welded on the oil pump cover plate and then the plate was verified for straightness. A 12AN line was run from the pan to the pump.

The engine was test fired last Saturday for the first time. After we got initial oil pressure and let the engine get up to operating temperature, I ran it up the RPM scale to @5500. And even at that high of RPM the oil pressure was rock solid. I was a little concerned that it may be affected some by where the oil was entering the pump. But it seems to be fine. This is a well used aluminum pump and really nice gear that will be run . Hopefully it will last a while.

Good Work Covalt clan.

Yes we are pretty sure it will. He went to a Coil over front end kit with rack and pinion steering. He has lots of room around everywhere with the K frame being gone.

I guess I wasn't aware they made an aluminum oil pump...maybe in the later years?

IMO...10 quarts of oil is too much but that's another topic....

Aluminum pumps were in the earlier years I think

OK, good looking Swinger.
More pics of the pump side of the engine (with the mods), please.
I don't know when they stopped but I have a 73 engine with an aluminum pump on it (OEM) and I believe my 79 Volare also had an aluminum one on it. I think I also have an aluminum one on an 83 truck engine but I would have to go back and double check. All the replacement pumps I have seen are cast iron.

Thanks.....my memory is fading lol. I went out and looked and one of the 170's I have uses an aluminum pump...most likely original.

Yeah, I am starting to rethink my color choice for my Belvedere.

I like more organic earthy subtle rust color tones myself.

beige, copper, butterscotch, oldmantan, cashmiere..

Although I do Have a blue truck,(had) a Wine Colored Ramcharger and some fugly yellow valiant, soon to be back to its proper beige.
