Good Morning! I replaced my rocker arm assembly and adjusted the valves hot. The engine is very noisy and runs a bit rough at idle. I got it warmed up (short drive) and adjusted it three times to make sure I was right. I replaced the assembly because the adjusters were no longer holding tight. (Rocker Arms Unlimited) I cleaned the oil pump pressure relief valve and installed a Wix filter thinking it was an oiling issue. It is a 1962 Dart and the engine has never been apart...miles were thought to be around 80k or so. It will run Ok, not hot, and fairly smooth under acceleration and cruising. It is slightly blown by, worse when it sits for long periods. It has an added electronic ignition and the plugs and cap are recent. What am I missing? Jerry Kenney, Frisco TX |

Are you adjusting in the correct order? The valve oreintaion changes at cyl 3-4. The intake for 3 is next to the intake for 4 EI, EI, EI, IE, IE, IE. If using a stock cam lash should be .010 intake, and .020 exhaust. |

Check them dead cold and see if you can find the loose ones. How did it run with the old rockers? You might have a burnt valve. |

Ran ok, I just added a new carb so that is a variable. It never idled great, but now it seems worse. I will check it cold today, make sure I installed the rocker assy right side up, and check the oiling galley at the rear rocker assy bolt to make sure it is not plugged. I am trying to stave off a rebuild, but I might be looking at that. Thanks for the help. Jerry |

It's unclear what you mean by 'noisy'. Do you mean mechanical noise, as in the rockers are clacking away? Or do you mean 'noisy' as in running rough and generally unhappy? |

Checked it cold and had three loose to the pushrod tops. Started and ran to operating temp and I can see oil going to the pushrod tops and rocker arm assy. I tried to attach a video but even a very short one exceeds the limits to attach. It is noisy as in clicking valve sound, much more than a slant should have. I will adjust them again and see if I can improve them. Thanks again. Jerry |

No, I adjusted them hot. The car is less noisy, but it still is noisier than a slant should be. Update....it is running rough at idle, but it runs smoothly at 45-55 mph. I hear a slight pinging when the engine is under load. (added premium fuel the last few times) It seems to have as much power as it ever has since I got her in 2017. That said, it is tired. It is blown by and I have a couple of cylinders that are low compression. I notice the last two times that she is smokey at startup at the tailpipe after sitting but usually improves once it warms up and is driven. The oil light stays on a bit longer than it used to at cold start. (I cleaned the oil pressure relief valve and switched to the Slant-6 forum recommended WIX oil filter) The car has less than 100k on it, but it sat a lot and sits more than it is driven. I want to rebuild the engine this summer as it is time to do it. I will have many questions I am sure! Thanks for all the help on this. This forum is the best. Jerry Kenney, Frisco TX |

UPDATE: I pulled the motor and disassembled it. Found some metal in the oil pan with a good amount of sludge. Digging around in the sludge it has a silver/grey color....is this bearing material? My oil light staying on at start up may be related to sludge? The oil pump gear looks good and the oil pump seems ok. Piston tops look good, cylinders don't have much damage. The number 3 exhaust valve is damaged and looks as though it could not seal. Overall looks pretty good for 60 years! Now time to chase down parts, clean and paint removed parts and take the engine to the machine shop. |

If there's that much sludge it's probably blocking the pickup tube and screen so that the oil can't get thru. With that bearing material in the pan that's what happens when you have a sludge monster |

Did the motor sit for an extended period of time? If so the gray sludge is sediment/moisture from sitting. Bearing would be sparkly/flaky metal. If it's torn down this far, time for bearings anyway. |

The car sat a lot before I bought it. If it had less than 100k miles than my bet is first owner did lots of short trips. In my time, it sits a lot. The tailpipe smoking was always present (better as it warmed up) and the engine was blown by. Low compression last time I checked it - 1 (106), 2 (101), 3 (50), 4 (91), 5 (91), 6 (80) But it ran, rough at idle but not bad at 40-45mph. That said, it was time to do the rebuild. Working on cleaning parts and cleaning up the k-frame and engine bay. Thanks again for the comments - gpk1961, Frisco TX |
