OK I did have a conversation with Ken at OC yesterday. He said you are correct that with the mushroom lifter you can have a more aggressive cam profile. He also mentioned that with the slant six's .904 lifter he could grind a very aggressive profile. More than what we could use or need. Also, currently none of his vendors that he deals with even offer that type of lifter anymore. He did have 16 used lifters from a big block Mopar is has been sitting on for years.

I've know Ken for a long time and as we ended our conversation, he has kind of chuckling. I asked what was up and he said slant six engines don't turn up 9000 rpm and don't have 560 cubic engines. Which by the way is what his race car has.

Once again..... my 2 cents. OC can make anything we need without breaking the bank.

I think Team Green turned 9000 RPM.
If not them, Mike J did.
Maybe.......

Looks doable for sure. Before you pull the trigger on a cam or lifters, source the bushings(custom)and a shop that will install and hone them for you...and spotface the bottom of the lifter bores....

I'm pretty sure I could make the bushings (I have a lathe), and quite a large supply of adjustable reamers. I believe I could come up with a spot face tool, the correct size (I have some smaller ones).
At one point in a past life, I was a tool and die maker. I'm just running out of "life time". I just wish "Charlie Browns" favorite saying was true.

Sounds like you can make it happen Charlie. I'm sure others are anxious to give it a try as well....

Howard Davis claimed at one time he was turning his 9000. Mike's comment was that he needed a new tach because his was broke.

I can guarantee Mike never turned 9000. When I got it, the air shifter in the car was chipped at 6200.

Howard is a pretty with it dude.

Maybe he makes some tall tales, and maybe he does not. I don't know about that, as I have never met him. Just chatted on the phone a few times. If the tach was accidentally switched for 8 cyl it is possible that it was reading wrong?

I was just stirring the pot
No data to support such foolishness
I for one have never turned much over 4200

Howard actually turns his 7000.

I believe the 9000 came up after a few adult beverages.

I've spun mine 7000. It makes a lot of noise, but no more power than turning it 6300.

If you are shifting at 6800 regularly and you miss it due to a fly up your nose or some other trite then 7000 is a possibility for sure! :D :D

I bet team Green used to shift near that regurally or maybe at 7200. They had the gearing to regularly support such antics! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Yes but I think it was determined that the explosive launches were bending the crank not the RPM's But the Billet crank will help in all situations, except lightness.:D

One thing you have to remember on a Slant, there is no pressure oiling to the lifters. Rollers need oil to survive on the street.

I used to work at a hot rod shop. Every street cruiser wanted a roller in his motor so he could brag about it at cruise nights. These same guys would idle around all night. With idle speeds at normal settings we were seeing lots of lifter failures. We turned idle speeds up to 16 to 1800 in gear and the roller issues went away.

Gen 3 Hemis are notorious for lifter tick. The issue appears to be oil flow at idle. See what I'm getting at?

Slant lifters only get oil from splash and drainback. Doug came up with some modifications to keep oil built up around the lifters. Will it save rollers? Do it and see.

Yes, it was answered here by DaveM:

Looks like I need to check out the forum it little more often. My first two roller cams were just mopar stock cams reground by OC.
I could usually get maybe 55 to 60 runs before the lifters started digging into the camshaft lobes. But that was a whole sesaon for the wagon. I did purchase two steel cams from OC and installed one last year and ran the car with no problems. Think that cam was around 280* duration @ 50 and .660'' lift. Installed height is 1.900 so their is a good selection of valve springs to pick from.

So... the problem is. Ken gets these cams from LSM and they are kind of hard to deal with. Once they make the cams, that are all the same pattern, are only roughed in, Ken has to finish grinding them and there are only small changes he can make. Lobe centers, duration, lift and stuff like that. Finding the cam profile to meet everyone's needs might be a challenge. Also LSM needs an order for 20 cams before they start. Ken doesn't want to get stuck with all the unsold cams so it would to be like a group buy. right !!

You can get more power from a roller but it's a lot of extra money that could be spent somewhere else.

Oh.... with all the extra spring pressure you need for the roller lifters, it's really hard on camshaft bearings. Forgot to mention that little tid bit.
