Car Model: 1963 Dodge Dart
Hey ya'll, I've been dealing with an issue for awhile now and can't figure it out. I have a 63 Dart with a 225 in it and it just struggles to get started. However, if I actually do manage to get it to start it'll only stay on if I hold the throttle all the way down and its clear the engine doesn't like it due to how bad it shakes. I've replaced all my spark plugs, ignition coil, the ballast resistor is fairly new, new fuel pump, and am running fresh gas through a fuel line from a jerry can. My best guess is the timing may be off, but I don't hear any kickback, and am not too sure what running retarded sounds like. Any ideas?

Have you adjusted your valve lash? If the valves are too tight, that might cause or contribute to this issue. You should also get/borrow a dialback timing light and check the ignition timing with the vac advance hose disconnected and plugged (to the carb side of it).

Best,
Lou

You say coil, plugs replaced but what about cap rotor wires?

Your carburetor and choke want attention. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download. Tune-up parts and technique suggestions are in this post.
