For those guys who build their own engines, what sort of clearance figures have you come up with between the cam bolt and the timing cover. On the engines I have on hand, I have measured about 0.25 inches of clearance. I am working on a cam button for the slant, a trim to fit (for clearance), that basically fits over the cam bolt. I was going to just make it 1/2 inch "tall" but the engineers have told me that this will cause some issues related to shrinkage and thick parts. I/2" would have left plenty of room to trim for clearance, but now I am thinking I might just go with something like 0.35 - 0.40" height.
Any data you guys can offer here would help.

I run a rocker bolt through timing cover. Honestly the timing cover is pretty flimsy for that but I run mine in until I see the timing cover flex. Then back it off a 1/4 turn or so. I figure that is just a "smidge of clearance and whatever interference may be there will soon wear into place. Always use a smooth head bolt on the cam.

I am very familiar with that style of cam stop. I have this idea and I will see it through, even if it doesn't work that well.
What's the worst that can happen.,......

Set your cam up and make sure it's all the way back in the block. Put a lump of clay on the bolt and cover with plastic wrap. Install cover with the gasket, then carefully remove cover. Slice clay and measure thickness.

Yes, that is how I measure the clearance. I am wondering what clearances OTHER people have measured. I am in the design stages of the cam button and it would help to have as much data as I can get.

Not many do it that way. Nut and rocker adjuster is much easier.

Team Green may have done a spacer at one time.

The timing cover will deform in the area where the button contacts it. You'll need to reinforce it by spot welding a piece of sheetmetal on to the outside of the cover. A cam button from a GM(Buick 231) is spring loaded and can be another option....

When I tear the engine down this winter I will let you know what is going on.
I ran that style of button in my 11 second 440 for a few years.
No problems.
Oh yea, a gentleman who won Indy in a Hemi Funny car in 1969 gave me the button.
Pretty sure he knew what he was doing.

Well, just an FYI. I have these in the development stage.

Cone shaped ‘button’ that fits over a 7/16” hex bolt head (5/8” wrench)
It is Derlin, roughly 0.644" total height leaving it about 0.400" above the cam bolt head (the cone part).

It fits snugly over a factory slant six cam bolt (pictured). I put a piece of paper inside the bottom just to give contrast for the picture.

Have these made it to the "For Sale" stage yet?
