Title says it all. I have a 67 slant with the 904 torqueflite and it is now slipping everywhere. ( it has been sitting for about a year) I found a rebuilt 904 with a hughes 3000 rpm stall off a small block, will it work with the slant 6? Thanks!

The slant six has a different transmission case than the small block, sorry. Also, the '67 and earlier engines have a smaller pocket in the crank for the torque converter snout so that torque converter isn't usable either. You can swap most of the V8 guts into your case though.

If the trans is from a small block it will not fit a slant six. A small block converter for a 904 (slant six or V-8 ) will fit a slant six.
However the converter/trans changed the diameter of the pilot hub on the converter, and the input shaft of the trans, between 67 and 68. If your engine and trans are actually 1967, then the replacement trans and converter must be 67 or older, to bolt in without special mods.

Well, the small block V-8 904 case/bell housing is different than /6. Many v-8 torque converters had balance weights for the eng (/6 is neutral balance). If V-8 trans is '68 or later, the converter hub (& input shaft) are larger than '67 & won't fit your crankshaft center register.

thanks for the info. Does anyone living near the S.F Bay Area know how and have time to rebuild a 904 torqueflite from a 67? I just got my car running, after a year of rebuilding everything under the hood. Cash is tight and am looking for a trans or a rebuild. Any help would be much appreciated. I can trade some very high end wine for partial trade?

If you rebuilt the engine you can rebuild the transmission. Get an appropriate manual and rebuild it. Tranny shops love that people think Automatic transmissions are complicated. They aren't. The FSM does a darn good job of explaining what's going on, and there aren't that many parts.

The key to working on them is to get everything extremely clean. Don't even bust a bolt loose till the outside is spotless. The results will reflect on how seriously you take that little bit of advice.

I am trying my hardest to find a transmission. I bought the 904 from a 68 and want to put it in my 67 gt. What do I need to do? I have exhausted my $$$$ funds for the car. Now I have a 68 904 that wont work with my 67? If that is the case than I have a 68 904 for sale

Is it possible to machine the back of the early crank to accept the later yr converter? Have a similar project and don't want to mess up.

Yes, you can open up the crank pocket, on the early crank to accept the later torque converter. Use the early flex plate. Or you can swap the crank for the later crank, if you are going to remove the crank, anyway. If swaping cranks then use the late style flexplate. Remember the late style converter must be used with the late style trans.

I don't know if Edge will still build a late style converter with a small pilot or not, but that is about your only option. Charlie can answer the converter question better, he's had some built.
