I am working on my '62 Valiant.

I am correct in thinking that I do not need to pop the diff cover to get the axle out correct? It seems that on this one I need an axle puller as it is stuck in there for some reason. I am pretty sure there are no "C" clips on a 7 1/4 but I have been wrong before.

My Makeshift dent puller turned axle puller / trans pump puller was not up to the task so I bought one, and when it arrives I will try that.

Just unbolt the 4 retainer nuts, and pop the axle out. Sometimes pretty well stuck, but no retainer clips, or anything like that.
PS: Most axle pullers will not accommodate the 4 inch bolt pattern.

or you can drill your axles, and drums.

I've heard they exist like that but I've only ever worked on the newer 7-1/4s that do have c clips. I forgot what year they changed.
I believe the older style 7-1/4 had axles /outer bearings that were designed like axles on an 8-3/4. meaning that axles R&R would be like working on an 8-3/4. Too bad the rest of the 7-1/4 isn't as good as an 8-3/4, haha

That's what I thought.

I can make a puller to fit the 4" pattern if needed. This one is sure stuck. The retainer plate is unbolted etc. but the axle is stuck in there good. I will try the other side and see if it is stuck good too!

The Proper axle remover tool arrived last nite.

As you said Charrlie, it was too small for the 4" Bolt circle, but I enlarged it to work with the 4" Bolt circle.

The bearing was just somewhat rusted to the housing case. It came out easily with the correct tool!

Yep, pretty much normal.
Greg, do me a favor. If you can see down inside the axel tube, see if it looks like there is a "hex" hole down by the carrier bearing, like on the 8 3/4 bearing adjusters. Some 7 1/4's had the hex adjusters, and some used shims. Thanks.

Thanks, just curiosity. I have been informed that adjusters weren't used until around 1972 or so. But I have seen them in earlier cars. But that doesn't mean the rears haven't been changed out. I never bothered to check date codes.

This one appears to have no hexes.. just shims.

I think the ones you encountered in pre '72 cars were probably swapped.
