My 1966 Dodge Dart does not have the brake lights working. The turn signals themselves work OK. I replaced a dead brake light fuse, but still no brake lights. Checking the switch on the pedal with a volt meter shows correct operation - 12 volts in, switches 12 volts out when pedal pressed.

So I presume this is a fault in the turn signal switch, as that's the next place the brake wiring is routed. Any tips on replacing a turn signal switch? Brands to avoid? Are repro parts bad enough I'm better off rebuilding mine, and if so, how? (The FSM doesn't think anyone would try such a thing.) I will replace the turn signal cancel cam while I'm there, as it definitely needs a new one.

Check the connector(s) at the turn signal switch. I can't remember which side had the female pin but I had trouble with them spreading out and not holding onto the male part snuggly causing odd things with the signals / flashers / brake lights.

Yep, Check that Connector under the steering column from the Turn signall Switch to the Dash Wiring Harness. Then Check the LF Kick Panel Connection from the Dash Wiring Harness to the Body Wiring Harness.

I was gonna say: be picky and choosy if you wind up needing a new switch (which you likely do). There's a bunch of junk on the market.

New switch arrived - thanks, Dan! I used the tie-a-wire to the old wires trick, but pulling new wires back through the column is being difficult. I may need to take the column apart further...

Hi Matt,
Instead of tying a wire to pull through, maybe consider butting them together then use electrical tape to make a temporary "wire pulling splice".

I don't think you should need to disassemble the column to accomplish this.

Don't tie a wire, tie a string. A wire is too bulky. Switch remove/replace guidance is here.

So, finally got the cables pulled. I finally had to use a string to pull eight strings through, tie and tape each string to a wire, and pull the wires individually.
