This is Matt Cramer - I can't seem to get back into my old account, made a new one. I've been away from this board for too long.

So, last week I had my Dart apparently running with no leaks, for the first time in years... but then it became pretty clear that the coolant was leaking into the oil. And engine leakdown tests were very high. I'm currently in the process of removing the cylinder head to see just how bad things are. At best, it may just need a new head gasket - at worst, a complete overhaul.

So - what's the current recommendations on slant six head gaskets? This one has a pretty big turbo that should be able to get around 15-20 psi of boost into the motor. Felpro? Aussiespeed? Copper?

Hi Matt,

Welcome back! Glad to hear you are back on the turbo Slant 6 Dart project. I am using an "endurotec" Aussie gasket, which you can order here:

Their shipping is pretty reasonable. If you need one ASAP, I could ship you one of my spares. For more than 15 psi, most folks would recommend a copper gasket. I am not up on the latest there as I have only used composition and have gone up to 14 psi w/no troubles.

Happy building,

Lou

Thanks for the offer - I'll see how badly hurt the engine is first, though, and I suspect I'll want a copper gasket. I tried a leakdown tester and it read 80% on all but one cylinder, and the last one was in the 60% range.

Oops. I blew one head gasket at about 9 psi before I had meth/H2O injection, on a hot day, with only pump gas, getting happy with the ign advance... Still drove home 130 mi on 4 cylinders... After that, no troubles, but am using a conservative tuneup for sure. 12.75@ 108 best on 13 psi or so at ~3300 racewt.

I personally have spent years away from the board as well. Matt you are one of the posters I looked up when I started back on the board. I have your book sitting in my garage and a MS3 kit from DIY on the shelf. Glad to hear you are back on the forum. I have been looking at my MS3 kit for years thinking about building it, but I had no workspace good enough until very recently. Welcome back.

MS3 book? That's probably something I will need. Still available?

I think he means this one. Not MS3 specific, although the MS3 does make an appearance.

Update - got the head off the motor today. The amount of actual damage looked to be minimal. I'm going to give the head and block surfaces a bit of a cleaning-up, use some Marvel Mystery Oil or ATF in the cylinders to unstick the rings, and put a stock replacement head gasket at this point. Then I can make sure the turbo setup and other mods are working - I can come back and put together a motor set on kill later.

Looks like the head was slightly warped - dropped it off to be milled today. I'll change out the valve stem seals when it gets back.

I have a couple steel head gaskets and could be convinced to part with one for a few bucks. :-)

Sorry, should have updated this thread - the motor is back together and running on a Felpro head gasket, for now.
