Hey everyone, I've had issues where the fuel cap gasket seems to melt and stick to the filler tube of my 1970 Dodge Dart.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any good sources of just the gasket for the fuel cap?

Also wondering if anyone has good ideas as to why this is happening, and what I can do to prevent it?

It calls for using a gasket made of an appropriately gasoline-resistant material. Viton, for example. You will likely have to do some hunting; I don't have the measurements for what you need, but I think a 2" outside diameter is probably roughly what you're after. The inner diameter will be a bit of a wildcard. Here's a start, and if none of those is appropriate you might wind up writing here, here, here, here, and here. Or maybe get some 0.050"-ish Viton sheet and a gasket punch set and make your own.

Just a small update here. Over the winter months I picked up a 6" x 6" x 1/32" sheet of Viton rubber sheet from Amazon. I feels like the 1/32" is a good thickness at least compared to the gaskets that came with my previous fuel caps. I used the deteriorating gaskets to mark out and cut new replacement gaskets. They are not perfect since it's just me and a scissors, but they fit fine and should perform the task. Later this Summer, I will update to see if the Viton holds up. Thanks all for the suggestions.

edit: Oh, also as for the OD of the gasket, I measured with a caliper, and that came out to 2.135". Seems to be a pretty good size.

I'm cheap and you may be, too!

Have you any interest in selling one or two 2-1/4" squares of your 6x6" to recoup your investment?

Should be able to go in a regular envelope with normal postage.

I'd hate to spend a whole $15 and have all that extra staring at me from a spot by my workbench for, probably, the rest of my life.

I went with the 6x6" because I had two gas caps that I wanted to fix, and I broke the very first one I made. So long story short, I do not have enough material left to make any more that will fit. Oh well, I'm just glad I got it to work.

Do you feel that the 1/32" was the right thickness?

I wasn't sure whether that was good, or whether it should be 1/16", because my gasket had gotten thinner as it dried out over 60 years.

1/32" is correct for sure. I compared the thickness with my deteriorating ones, and it's perfect.
