Post subject:  Fuel Pump Problem and Options

The last few times I drove my '64 Valiant 225, the oil pressure light flckered at idle when warm. With less than 10k on the engine, I ruled out engine wear, so my first guess was a bad sender. However, when I looked under the car, I saw a few drips from the fuel pump area. Since there was an unusual buildup of oil in the drip pan, I checked the dipstick and found the engine was overfilled about two quarts. I fear that my fuel pump has been pumping gas into the crankcase, and I now have some drastically diluted oil!

I only found one Carter pump on RockAuto, so I'm guessing my choice is down to one, and I suppose it is made in China.

Does anyone make a high-quality mechanical pump, or should I be considering an electric pump? If so, any suggestions? Comments?

Get one of these—the kind with the round stamped-steel "hat", like this:

Also, It will also be a good idea to service the oil pressure relief valve to make sure it's doing its job, as described in these two threads: thread 1, thread 2.

Hey Dan, thanks for the info! :D :D Most of the new ones are absolute junk and the fittings twist and leak and are just like they are made of tin foil. Anyway, my question is about whether or not there will be any problems with the AC ones that look to be 20-30 year old stuff? Will the diaphragms still be Okay in them? Thanks again!

I never had to re-replace one after installing it, even after pulling it out of a well-worn old box, even well into the gasohol era. It's possible you could have an early failure, but early failure is practically guaranteed with today's Chinese lumps of fuel pump-shaped garbage.
