Post subject: 4-Speed Shifter diagram
PostPosted: Mon Aug 05, 2002 8:53 pm
I need a diagram to show the Hurst shifter mechanism. Mine didnt work, so i took it apart, and found the 2 roll pins were broken. The only problem is, I cant remeber how to put it back together! If anyone had a diagram, or some pics, it would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks, Tom B

Dusternut.....You took the shifter apart !? Oh, man.....the only place I've ever seen a diagram like you need was many years ago, in a Hurst repair manual, and that was while I was selling parts for a local outlet.
At this point, my advice is to persue one of two avenues.....find a parts store that's been around for like, forty years, or see if you can contact Hurst for what you're looking for.

Darn, those arent really the answers i wanted to hear, but oh well. There is no independant auto part stores around here. Just Napa and the chain stores. It looks like its time to dish out the cash for an Indy shifter from Jegs. 130$ with the rods and tranny levers.
Thanks everyone

Well, I wouldn't get to hasty.....somebody might not have read your post, yet, that has what you're looking for. There's also the possibility of e-mailing Hurst with the model, or they may have a drawing on thier site.

Yeah, but this shifter is pretty bad. Its really rusted, the handle is welded to it, and im missing the reverse rod. It seems like it might just be better and less of a hassle to get everything new. All new rods and levers, i dont have to worry about sourcing parts, and getting rid of the play.

Sorry to say that I don't have a diagram on the "insides" of the Hurst shifter.
Between having a few extra shifters and having a factory rebuilding service available, I never found the need to even take one apart.
As you noted, they don't look real complex or hard to rebuild, that is, if you have the replacement parts available.

Rods can be made easy enough. I say take it apart and take pictures, post them and we can collectively figure it out (kind of like intercontinental surgury)

I just talked to my Buddy Rocky becasue I rememebr he had to rebuild the hurst in his elcamino with the m 21 tranny. it had the tstick pull up reverse lockout. Anyway, one day his kids got it stuck in reverse, third and first, and snapped out one of the plates. He welded it back together and put in new roll pins etc. He thinks it's a peice of cake, and it's pretty obvious once you get it apart. Mind you, his is not like my (whateverhurstIhave) hurst because there is no central location for nuetral (IE mine has to referenced off a central pin hole so it will go into reverse from neutra.) his gates just have to be aligned with each other, not with the body. Still, how hard can it be? I say, ripp it up ANYWAY even if you do buy a new one.

I put it back together w/ new roll pins and it has the same problem, It would only move one of the levers on the tranny. the other 2 just move freely, and the shifter has no "gates" I just ordered a new Hurst indy shifter from www.Jegs.com
for 127.00$ comes with new shift rods and the tranny levers too. I will still get this shifter to work though!

I fixed it! I fixed it! I found out that the one from jegs was on backorder so igave mine another shot, and it works great. I made a reverse shift rod, but its mickey-moused at best.
--Does anyone have an A-body reverse shift rod for sale???
Thanks for the help everyone!

do not use my name in vane. I can be your best friend!
I found that re-fdrilling a hole on the reverse shifter plate on the tranny closer to the bolt changed the mechanical ratio enough that it stopped popping out of reverse. also, don't be afraid to buy some thread rod and bend the piss out of it.

What nmo pictures? What about my needs?

(just kidding)

Glad you got it fixed

Richard

Sorry about that mickey mouse:)

I bent some steel rod into the shape i needed and welded bolts on the ends and used locknuts. Simple and free. It turns out that the tranny i got was an Overdrive unit. 3rd and 4th are switched around.
