I was looking at the bores in my block tonight, and there are very fine lines running up and down the cylinders in the direction of the piston stroke. Is that pretty normal or should I run a hone through them and install new rings? I'd rather not pull the pistons if I can help it, but I don't want to build the motor twice. I checked the piston depth as well and came up with .166. My rebuilt head will show up tomorrow, and I'll cc it to get the chamber size. Then I'll need you guys help in determining how much to shave the head. My cam will be here on Wed. Then hopefully it's cleanup the block and start reassembling everything.
Thanks,
Wylde Bill

I'm somewhat old fashioned on engine rebuilds so here's my 2penneys  The lines you're seeing in cyl wall are normal on a "been used"motor.I don't know how many miles are on that engine but if you have it tore apart this far I say "hone an ring it".Since you're playing with the head you will be increasing the compression and with used rings that can leed to oil burning and increased blow-by.If there's a bunch of miles on the engine it wouldn't hurt to plasti-guage the crank and throw in a set of rod bearing while it's apart.Hey I figure it's cheaper and easier to do it right once than half right twice. My advice(and work) comes with a 50/50 guarantee,"if it breaks you get both halfs".Have fun and good luck 8)

Light scoring probably isnt going to hurt anything, but, as previously noted, if you're already in there you might as well go all the way. In for a penny, in for pound.

I ordered the rings and gasket kit today. They actually had the ring set, but had to order the gaskets. They'll be in tomorrow. My head came today and I'm going to try to cc them tonight. The only syringe I could find is 15cc, so I guess I'll have to fill it up a couple times. The cam will be here tomorrow then I just have to have the head shaved and I'm ready to start putting everything back together. I can't wait to hear her run.

How much are you shaving the head?

I just picked up the head today. It was shaved .100. The guy who did it apparently isn't used to shaving a head that much, and even shaved part of his machine down. Ooops. Unfortunately the Erson cam I ordered isn't here yet. Apparently their inventory is off, and Tom thought they had two in stock when they had none. So my cam won't get ground until Monday. I won't see it until next week, when I was supposed to have it last Wed. Oh well, gives me more time to clean up the engine bay and get the motor ready.

My instructor @ Chemeketa Comm. College here in Salem isnt used to having slants in his shop... mostly your typical SM Chevys, and SM F@#$, and the occasional wild oldsmobile 455.

He wasnt surprised @ the .100" shave though. I cut it with a CBN tip for a surface finish of around 20 RA.

I got the motor back together without any incidents. When I first tried to start it, it was backfiring through the carb. I had a feeling that it was 180 out on the distributor, but I had lined it up with #1 cylinder. Then someonr on the list told me that if you do that, it will be 180 out. I pulled the dist. and rotated it 180 and bolted it back down, turned the key and she fired immediately. So quickly in fact that it startled me. A very proud moment for me, as this was the first motor I've ever built completely on my own. It has much more power with the boosted compression and hotter cam. Now I just have to do the body, paint, and interior. All I need is money and time. nothing to it...Laughs

I haven't taken any pics yet of the finished product. I probably should, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Good work...
Give the head a "warm" retorque, even if they say you don't have to.
The do a running valve adjustment, set them on the loose side for now.
Now onto the body work!!
