When I take my dart for a cruise, and leave home, it takes my car a while before it shifts up into second gear. but once it did, the problem doesnt occur anymore...
auto trans of course...

what's the problem here? Should i wait a lill longer to let it heat up before i take it for a spin or is it something related to kickdown linkage?

This is pretty common when the transmission gets some miles and years on it. Next time, try shifting into Neutral and then cold-starting the car, rather than taking off from Park. It's probably (past?) time for a fluid and filter change and band adjustment. What year transmission is this?
