while checking out the link to the crank scrapers found this article on adding a passage to the oil pump body, to direct a stream of lube to the oil pump gear,, ,,,is this a reasonable approach?,

I have used that modification to deliver more oil to the gear... but it is hard to drill such a small diameter hole for that long of a distance.

A variation to this modification is to tap a spiral groove 1/3 the way down the impeller shaft bore, from the impeller cavity side. This gets pressurized oil to a recessed area on the impeller shaft.
Then drill the small spray hole, from the gear side, angled to intersect the shaft bore, near the end of the shaft recess, so the spray hole taps into the pressurized oil supply.

Doc,

If I send you my new HV oil pump can you do the oil slinger/squirter mod as part of your blueprinting process with the hardened gear? I have my gear lapped to the cam.

Thanks,

My thoughts exactly,, on the drill depth,, could be done, but you would want a premium bit, a stable set up and the right feeds and speeds

for Doc's suggested alternative,
1) so one would grind a spiral slot in the shaft with a dremel,, why spiral,,
that would make the channel longer,, are you thinking it would pull a flow better?
3) channel depth and width, about the same size as the drilled connection orifice?
2) and for the drilled connection hole, did you use the size recommended in the posting?,,

thanks

I think the spiral groove is for shaft support.

A straight groove may act as a scrapper and scrape off oil lubricating the shaft for a significant distance.

And the spiral would prevent the shaft from settling into the groove if there's any side force on the shaft.

Correct on the spiral, you want good shaft support, all the way around the shaft.
If you look at the direction of rotation, a clockwise spiral groove (RH knurl or tap) combined with clockwise shaft rotation will help draw oil down the groove.

A .020 to .032 squirt hole is all you need but those are hard to drill for any long distance. Usually I drill larger and then plug the exit point, then redrill with the smaller size.
