Hey everybody hows it going?

My t3 turbo was feel really flat above 3500 rpm so I upgraded to a bigger turbo. It off a desiel truck!! It has a ceramic ball bearing so I should get it to spool just as fast. The old turbo would not spin when I was just at a idle and the new one is spinning all the time. When I started the car to let it warm up, then shut it down I got out of the car ,walked to the front and looked in at the turbo and it was still spinning!!!

I can not sleep so I went out to take a quik snap shot and here it is. I will have more soon.
Andrew

Hey Andrew,

Looks and sounds great. I am toying with turbo ideas for my '68 Dart, so we should talk sometime. I have a TEO4H turbo off a 2.5L, so I wonder if that's big enough for 6-8 psi on a nearly stock motor and at least 4500 RPM?

Keep up the good work,

Lou

Come on, Lou. If your gonna boost it, BOOST it. 20 lbs at least.

20 lbs on stock internals? Are you high?

To answer your question, Lou, I would say no. I would recommend a T3/T4 hybrid turbo for a stock slant, which is a T3 turbine combined with a T4 compressor section. This will provide the best of both worlds - fast spoolup and power all the way to redline. Best of all you can get one of these, brand new, for $450 or cheaper.

andrew: Nice looking setup! You really ought to run an air cleaner on that thing, small particles of dust and dirt will do amazing amounts of damage to a compressor wheel spinning at 120,000 RPMs. ;)

And yes, they will typically continue to spin even at idle. I'm surprised your T3 didn't!

Charlie - this is turbo project #1 for me, and will be on my daily driver. 20 lbs of boost will come, but later... I may go 10 lbs on this motor, but I want rock solid reliability too.

I want low-end power to satisfy the 2200 RPM converter in my A500 trans.

Chances are I will try the TE04H since it was $20 and upgrade to a T3/T4 (same bolt pattern?) after that. Where is a good source to get one of these new hybrids for $450? That includes built-in wastegate?

The motor will be Megasquirt MP-EFI'd so fuel map changes will be a snap.

Lou

Heh, it seems like it! :D Even running 10 psi on stock pistons is a gamble, at 20psi those things are guaranteed to let loose and destroy the motor (block, head, *everything*). If you were REALLY good with tuning, you *might* get a 1/4 mile pass or two out of it before it blew up in your face. Be sure to bring a broom and dustpan! ;)

We had over 250 runs(both 1/8 and 1/4) on stock cast pistons(pep boys specials) at 10-14# boost last year. That motor is still together on the engine stand as a back-up. Ran as fast as 10.50's in the 1/4. Pistons still look good.

Go for it Lou, we got your back!

I'm sure they still look good, obviously you didn't encounter any detonation problems (good tune). But what happens when you do? Kaboom! And the higher you go in boost, the less it takes to cause a big problem. If he had forged pistons, I would say go for it, but running that much boost on cast pistons is ridiculously, utterly stupid.

Do you have his back when he has to replace his motor cause he followed your advice?

I been called worse.

Hey Andrew what kind of boost level have you been running?

Shiftless how much are you running on your set-up?

Easy there Shiftless, I believe Charlie S was being a little sarcastic with his reply. He knows what a cast piston can or can't do.

I removed the filter for the pic.

Lou, That turbo will do fine on the slant six. You will not have a good top end. It will start to flaten out like mine. Also I would like to road race my car a VIR or summit this spring, would you be interested in meeting there for a weekend of racing?

I got the race gate on today and a 9lb spring. Its just a totaly drifferent car. I really do not know how to tell you guys what it feels like but after the run down the local straight away I had to catch my breath. I will have to make it to one of the slant races soon!!

I was running 6 psi with the other turbo and now its set at 9psi

Andrew

How do you think a turbo will work in road racing? I have read that it is very important to size it just right. If you let the rpms drop then the boost drops too...what is the lowest rpms you see on the course?

3 more #'s of boost is a lot. Ours runs about 14hp per pound so you are probably looking around at least 30 more hp!! I have run a NA car that ran 6.50's in the 1/8 but this turbo set-up feels like a great big hand pushing you in the seat the entire 1/4. It still pulls about 1.3Gs in the lights according to the datalogger.
It definitely has a unique feeling huh Andrew?
