How about $935K???

http://money.cnn.com/2012/08/19/autos/p ... r-auction/

Does it qualify as the world's most expensive slant?

It certainly qualifies as one of the world's most lied-about slant-6s. From the article: "the XNR, which is powered by a 260 horsepower "slant six" engine"

Bulk wrap.

I dunno. I'd have to see the dyno numbers before I discounted any claims.

The car did come pretty close to that speed with the modified body work. It's unlikely those parts survived. there were some superbird type mods to the front to get it to that speed.
It would take some serious tuning to get it to the listed engine performance specs, but it is possible. The Hooptie makes more HP than that by the E.T. calculators.

Yeah? I wouldn't. Not knowing what a far more reliable source than RM Restorations has told me about what is (and isn't) in that motor.

...in 1960-'61 with an engine not the same as the one presently in it.

You didn't quote the entire statement there Dan.

The aero on the XNR never did make that number. There were modifications that got it close to there.

The point is, the car did run close to those numbers in it's history. There's no reason to get ones tail in a twist over advertising meant for the select few financially solvent to purchase art work of this caliber. That's the rub. This should be thought of as the work of a master, not a functional implement of transportation. The descriptions spoke more to the legacy of this machine than to current state.

There are a lot of factors that play into getting "numbers" out of a slant. Numbers by themselves have little meaning when propelling a mechanical device with one or two lunatics from point A to Point B.

For something that probably will sit on a chunk of carpet behind glass or a roped off area in a museum/personal collection, those numbers are meaningless. It ran those numbers once, so that is what will be on the plaque that describes the car. Do you see a compelling reason to detract from the XNR's legacy?

No, I see a compelling reason to squawk about RM's claims.
