So I rounded up a vacume return spring from a hole in the wall auto shop, it appears to be the right diameter and the mech there said with the holley's you can substitute a return spring out of the Ford carter carbs, he said it may be a little stiffer of a spring but the only thing I may notice is more tension on the gas pedal and if it seems to just be to stiff I can trim it up a tad or gently warm up a small section of it with a torch to soften it a little as long as it seats properly on the metal disc portion of the excelerater pump it will be fine. Is this good info or will I run into a problem if the spring is to stiff?

He's wrong. If the spring is too stiff, the throttle may not return fully to the idle position.

Of caurse the one I found was too stiff and I am having a helluva time finding anywhere to buy one or shops that have the right tension, any info on this little sucker would help.

Finally found the spring at walker products and no ill intent Dan but incase any other holley 1920 1bbl owners run into needing this spring it is part# 66-100 and just labeled (SPRING) on the parts list for a 1920 holley I checked with their tech and he said it has to be the one for the diaphram return as all the others have a discription for opperation and this one is just called (SPRING) LoL. I'll repost after it's installed and hopefully working properly, Thanks again Dan for the right trail to follow, I'll agree with another posters comment "You should write a \6 book".

No. 66-100 is not the correct spring, 66-15 is. Look at the bottom right corner of page 63 (PDF page 63) of the Walker Holley parts catalog.

Probably my bad Dan with my terminoligy, I have the PUMP return spring, the 66-100 is the diaphram return spring that samwiches between the plate on the back of the accelerater pump and the main well ecconomizer assembly and is the one I have been hunting down, the pump return spring came with the rebuild kit. sorry bout that :(

Odd...the pump "return" (main) spring has never come with any Holley 1920 kit I've ever bought...what kit did you get?

I'd have to check the box to be sure, but I believe it was a kit by Walker and I got it at O'Reilleys auto parts. I'll check tonight and let you know it was only like $16 as well. Also it had 3 gaskets to go under the carb, 2 thin ones and 1 really thick one, I used the thick one because thats what was on the car. Do you know if that is the right choice out of the gaskets? The gasket is maybe a little more than a 1/4 inch thick.
