Hi, I have found a slant six from a fork lift. I do not know if its the original engine. looks like it was originally a turquoise green..

the only numbers I found or can see are the following.

behind the water pump- looks like 895250 ???hard to make out.

on the driver side- 530-11 and 1789..

please help with engine size, year made, application,, any useful info would be greatly appreciated.

Look at the block just above #1 cylinder (on the surface head gasket sits on) just ahead of the fuel pump, you should find some numbers stamped there. Give us those numbers and we can help you.

look at the hose running from the water pump to the bottom of the head. around 3 inches long its a 198 or a 225, shorter hose is the 170.

there is no # by the #1 spatk plug.. I have checked and rechecked..
There is no number by the #6 spark plug..

The only # that is engraved on the block is behind the water pump. It reads "895250"

I have looked at all the places this forum says to, and no other # is available. only the one behind the water pump.

the numbers that identify the engine are stamped into the top deck of the block..right below #1 spark plug,, likely lots of grime,,,

if you find the pad shown and it is blank,, then either it missed being stamped at the engine assembly plant,, or the case has had the top deck machined..

yes,, I have looked there.. many times. There is NO pad, tab or any sign of one ever existing???

Usually there is a small area on top of the block that the head does not cover in the same plane as the head gasket. It is right behind the alternator. That is the pad area where the numbers are stamped.

yes,, I have seen the pictures. I have checked the whole top of the block.
The only # is behind the water pump ( like discribed for the 1960).

the # is 895250. I dont know what else to say.

For the early engine, there are two possibilities, a 170 or a 225.

The deck height of the 170 is remarkably lower than that of a 225. As mentioned above, check the length of the hose that connects from the water pump to the bottom of the head.
If that is currently not on the engine, look at the flat surface where the water pump attaches to the block. Measure the distance from the top of the horizontal part of the casting to the deck. (The surface the head gasket rests on.)

If it's about an inch, you have a 170, if it's closer to three inches, you have a 225.

To make sure it isn't something else, how many "freeze" plugs are on the side of the block? There should be three on a 1960 block. If it has five, then it is a later engine.

Is the number behind the water pump actually "engraved" or is it cast in the block like the image below?

That hose is shown in the image below almost at the 12 O'clock position between two of the fan blades. It goes from the pump to the head directly below the thermostat housing area;




Do the spark plugs reside in tubes in the cylinder head like the lower one in this picture or are they in a "normal" arrangement like the upper head:

Ok... The motor has spark plug tubes.
It has 5 freeze plugs.
The hose and distance from the water pump to the top of the block is around three inches.

The # I found is engraved, not cast. And it is not on the side of the engine. It is on the top front of the block, (engraved) above the timing chain cover.

If this was a car/truck not a forklift/industrial I would guess the following:

Head with spark plug tubes: 1960 - 1974

Block with 5 core plugs: 1968 and newer

3" water hose: 198 or 225 CID

So, my best guess is that it's most likely a 225 with mechanical valvetrain made between 1968 and 1974. I can't help with the engraved number, hopefully someone smarter than me will chime in get all this right for you.
