I am thinking of installing electronic ignition on my 65 slant 6 belvedere;
Rock Auto offers two kits for about the same price.
Which is better, the Airtex kit or the Standard Motor Products kit?
if you've installed either of these, any surprises/problems?

I'd go Fopar's route, a long while back MP used to just sell the wiring harness for $30 and you could just get the parts at the junkyard and movae along...I would not pay $100 for a conversion kit.

There's also the Pertronix.

If you get the Pertronix 1, get their 3 ohm coil and you can get rid of the ballast resistor.........
