Hey guys,

Trying to do some remote troubleshooting for a friend as i can't get down there to help him at the moment. Is a slantsix, electronic ignition. Pretty much bone stock otherwise.

Conditions: Drives for a bit, it gets a bit warm and shuts off. Doesn't want to restart at that point. He was able to get it to start after waiting a bit. Then it did it again after a little more driving and didn't want to come back. Took the air filter off to peak, seems to be getting fuel. After a bit more waiting it started back up.

My gut reaction is maybe the coil is getting hot and dying?

It also sort of sounded like flooding. Would it flood from just getting warm when cruising on city streets? Maybe the float it dead and spilling too much fuel? If thats the case is there a quick and dirty fix to get the thing home if that happens?

He said at the time he was just slowly accelerating.. so I don't think timing.

When did he install the EI? If he just did so, he might have the pickup wires reversed. Could be a lot of things.

Was able to get off work early today after an eventful morning of patching servers.

I went and met him, It started right up. checked a few things. Did some minor tweaks of idle mixture and idle just to make sure everything was in the right area. Seemed fine. We drove it around the block a few times. Was all good. Wasn't as hot today in LA so we thought maybe it just wasn't warm enough. pulled over, eye balled a few other things. Let it sit a bit running. seemed okay so we were going to call it good and leave, then boom it just turned off.

It started right back up and died again. Then refused to start for a bit, then got it started again and pretty much had to floor it to keep running, let it shut off.

checked carb, accelerator pump working great. Checked all the connections, checked ballast resistors (which when I had the car I put spares in for quick swaps incase). Everything seemed fine, so we drove my car down the block to autozone and picked up a new coil, drove back. Tried to start, and it still didn't want to still, which is good because we swapped the connections to the new coil, boom started right up, so we knew for sure that was it.

The ECU will act like that too when it is going. My ECU did that exact same thing last year. I could go about a block max.......then it just died. Put the new spare in and have been driving strong since.....
