I had an overflow bottle out of a mid 70's A body tucked under the fender, and now hidden by the lower valance I fabricated. When I changed the water/No-Rosion mix out in the fall for antifreeze, I forgot to drain that bottle and it apparently froze and broke. The No-rosion is red, and the antifreeze is yellow. There has been red coolant dripping from the lower valance during the entire OD install. I will have to figure out if the bottle, or a fitting, or hose broke and get it replaced.

I would kind of like to keep this all up top if possible, but the pass fender is cluttered with other stuff, and the AC drier is tucked in between the radiator and inner fender, so may have do go down under again, which is inconvenient. Certain models of modern cars, and some older ones as well had an expansion tank up top. This would fit in nicely if it is large enough to do the job. I think it was a 64 Ford Galaxy I saw at a recent car show that had a stock, metal expansion tank sitting high between the radiator and engine block. There is room here for such an item. It seems to me my Corvette had a flat expansion tank that sat up high on the pass fender. Maybe I could make room on the drivers side for a similar piece.

Bottom line, how big does an expansion tank have to be? What portion of the total has to be accommodated here? Thanks for any thought on this. I know I could look this up on line, but what fun would that be? It's Winter, bleak, lonely, and I want to connect with my buddies.

I use a 2L pop bottle....it just sits in the space alongside the rad,,,,,

I have a 1 gallon antifreeze bottle zip tied to the radiator support panel. Use what fits. I would think anything bigger than 1 quart is sufficient.

Some Plastics will shrink up when hit with the hot overflow..


I use a 2 qt Gatorade bottle on the truck - Drill a hole in the cap and make sure the hose extends all the way to the bottom of the bottle.

I believe that the ford and vett water tanks are where they are because the top of the radiator is lower than the highest water jacketed point in the engine. Hence that is the place to add coolant and for trapped air to breath up to, they are not expansion tanks.

My 79 W150 has a plastic tank that sits between the rad. and the header panel,might work.

Well, I am a little mystified right now. I looked down in the bottle and it still has red coolant in it. Why was red coolant dripping from the valance? It must not have gotten below freezing in the garage. I will suck some out and add antifreeze soon. The thing is; why was there red colored coolant dripping out? This had to come from the overflow bottle as the coolant in the engine is yellow.

I do not see any leaks. When Charles Brooks was here to start the OD install we took it for a ride to test the shifting of the stock tranny, and I noticed when I pulled back in the garage after a short ride on a relatively cool day, the electric fan had come on. I did not think much about this until the coolant showed up under the car.

I wonder if I drove it just enough to get it warm enough for the thermostat to be just a bit cooler than the opening temp, and then it heat soaked when I cut it off. I will simply drive it and see what happens I suppose.

Its not rust. It's bright red, from the Norosion I put in it for the summer. I drained the block completely in September and put in new antifreeze and distilled water. Just forgot about the overflow bottle. Thanks for the thought though.

Go to goodwill and buy one of those camping canteen (only stainless steel, no aluminum) bottles and then hit home depot and get a pvc rubber cap and drill a hole in it for the hose.
