Today I spent $100 and got three large boxes full of old carbs. I got some oddball single barrel carbs, a couple Holley 5200s, a VW Solex carb, some unknown two barrel, about five Holley 4360s in various states of completeness and disrepair, and then a few potential gems:

A Carter AFB list 4200S. I think this is from a 1964 383 with an auto trans. I don't know the CFM though. I am going to sell this one to make my money back since it is complete, in decent condition, and has the original ID tag.

A Carter AFB list 9635sa. 625 CFM, nees some linkage pieces, jets, step up springs and pistons, etc... might be worth building, might be more expensive to get the missing pieces than to get a different carb.

Holley 4160, list 1850-3. 600 CFM complete. Needs a rebuild, but looks to be in decent shape.

Holley 4165 body only. List 6210.

Holley 4175, list 7002-1. 650 CFM. Mostly just the main body and the throttle plate.

My long term plans include adapting a supercharger to a slant, and I would like a carb that could be built up for that purpose. The 4165 and 4175 spread bores look interesting, but I think are too big, even with the vacuum operated secondaries. I am probably going to sell those.

In the short term, I am wondering:

(a) if there is a parts source for the missing pieces for the 625 CFM Carter (jets and rods are easy, I'm looking for things like screws and plates to cover the step-up pistons),

(b) if there is a way to reduce the CFM on the Carter (I have heard mention of replacing the primary venturis with ones from a 500 CFM Edelbrock to turn it into a 500 CFM carb. Where would I get such venturis?),

(c) if there is a way to reduce the CFM on the Holley 4160 (annular primary venturis? smaller venturis?) and where might I find such parts?

In the meantime, I will dig into the Holley 4360s and try and build a decent one for a naturally aspirated 225.

Any input is appreciated.

If you really want a 600 cfm Holley List 1850 with annular primary boosters I have one that I built and never used. I also have the electronic Holley "Mile-Dial" system so you can adjust the main metering from the dash board. The Mile Dial is not installed on the carburetor and can be had separately. The 390 Holley double pumper I have is what I'd probably recommend for a blower install. And this Eaton M112 from a Jaguar.

Hmmm. I will think about it. I am nowhere near putting a supercharger on yet, so I don't need a perfect carb right now. I was hoping I could save some bucks piecing one together over time but these carbs need too much. I was researching prices online to replace the missing parts on these four barrels and I would be ahead just getting a different complete carb. I will probably put most of these on eBay and save up for a single carb that is the right size and is complete. For now, I think I will focus on getting a 4360 cleaned up and try running that.

The cfm rating of the carb is very dependent on the size of the booster venturies. There is no easy or practical way to swap these on the Holley main body. You can reduce airflow by installing a baseplate with smaller openings but this will create its own set of problems.
Vacuum secondary carbs are more forgiving of oversizing as airflow through the primaries determines if/when the secondaries open. You can put heavy springs in the diaphragm or just (mechanically) block the secondaries from opening and theoretically have a 300 cfm 2 bbl.
I'm just sayin'...

Disabling the secondaries was my plan, but it still might be more economical to sell these and put the money towards a complete carb in better shape. If the Carter 9635 had been complete, I would run that and disable the secondaries. However, the cost of getting all the missing pieces would likely be more than the cost of just getting a different 500 CFM carb. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Still, I am fairly confident that I can sell these cabs and at least make my money back if not turna little profit.

But if anyone knows where to get the 500 CFM Edelbrock Performer/Carter AFB venturies to swap into a 625 CFM carb, let me know.

FYI- if anyone else is interested in playing with the Holley 4360 Economaster, I came across this info on another car board:

"I contacted Holley regarding replacement jets and they confirmed they are metric thread but had none available. They recommended Daytona parts company who was helpful but had none remaining and they recommended Carbs Only www.carbsonly.com in CA. I emailed and later spoke with Carlos who confirms Weber 32 36 jets will work and so I'm buying a couple sets from him to work with. Even though the numbering on the Weber jets is different they are supposed to be the same in thread size/pitch. He was very helpful/knowledgeable so I am optimistic this will work out."

Anyone who has messed with the 4360 knows that jets are N/A from Holley anymore. So a potential source of different size jets from Weber is great news.

Not all Holleys can receive annular boosters, FYI. The 600's can have them installed, it reduces them to about 575cfm at full throttle. The 450 can only be modified to take down leg boosters due to the bore/venturi restriction size.

FYI.

Thanks Rob! So I guess I will be putting these all on eBay and I will be on the hunt for a 400 or 500 CFM AFB/Performer or 390 CFM Holley (but I prefer the AFB/Performer). I also need an electric choke conversion kit for a 4360, but I think those are still available through Holley. 8)
