yes you have to plug the carb side, but you don't also have to plug the vac advance. vacuum from the carb work on the vac advance, not the other way around. just unhook that hose from the vacuum advance, leave it on the carb side, put a screw or golf tee in the now-loose end and that's all you need to do when you set timing.....

Noted Thanks for the advice
at an idle IF you are running ported vacuum to the vacuum advance you wont have much if any vacuum advance action.... if hooked to manifold vacuum then yes as soon as you unhook that hose you should notice the RPMs change. Most I see are hooked to ported vacuum and yes you will have both on most any given carb depending on which port you are talking about

Hello Everyone

Well I made some progress

I swapped out the vacuum advance canister and she is running well no more stuttering under load.

Thanks for the suggestions

While I was out I ran her out about 12 miles, stopped to check her out.

Popped the hood and witnessed coolant flowing out of the radiator cap.

waited 10 min and she started right up

about 1 mile from home she started steaming pulled over waited 10 and made the last mile home

any ideas I just swapped tstat radiator cap and added coolant?

timing is now 6 deg adv
700 RPM idle
spark gap .035

could it be too lean a mixture plugs look tan?
