Ho-ho-ho…Merrrrrrrry Glaremas!
Awesome! Way to go Dan! It is so nice to hear a calm presentation of science and fact-based information. I hope regulators listen.

The right way to do it is to create a contour signature. The message you're trying to convey isn't "Notice this blob of light/this blinking light over here". The message you want to send is "This is a motorcycle, and this is its position and direction of travel". With that information, other drivers are not only significantly more likely to effectively see you, but are also more likely to make appropriate gap-acceptance decisions rather than screwing that up and turning across your lane smack in front of you (one of the more common types of car/motorcycle collision).
The closest I have ever come to killing a person was this sort of situation. I was in the country pulling off an interstate about 2 miles outside of a small midwestern city. A motorcycle was coming towards me from my left at night. He had a single headlamp with no side markers. Behind him in the distance were normal lights from the small city. I did not perceive that single light source as a moving object and almost ended with a motorcycle impaled on my driving side when I pulled out in front of it.

Near miss, hope he learned why it almost got him killed.

What do we need to do to get the legislators and regulators to make some kind of federal level change here in the US and in Canada?
Live in a timeline other than this one. I could go on at much greater length about it, but that would only make a longer answer, not a better one. :(

It seems like this problem is not only in the USA. An article from "The Telegraph" which I think is in the UK.

And that's especially interesting, because outside the North American regulatory island, there is _much_ more stringent control over headlight glare. Lower-glare beam patterns, lower aim angles, mandatory periodic aim check-and-adjust on all vehicles, automatic levelling systems on high-output headlamps. This difference has existed for decades, except now glare complaints are up even in those countries. Which points at aspects of headlamps unregulated everywhere in the world: smaller and bluer (plus all the extra causes in North America where nobody's ever going to make you get your headlamps aimed and it's just about impossible to get a proper aim job even if you're paying money, etc).

Interesting.

Looks like at least some of the forward facing bulb regs are going to require a complete engine rebuild... not just a tune-up.

The msn article seems to call out the LEDs as having uniform brightness / intensity in the beam which the regs do not address. The ol' tungsten/ fresnel based lights and derivatives had hot spots. LEDs are the sun, but in blue.

That is my uneducated take on it.

I still run the older Halogen sealed beams on our 75 Dart. Compared to everyone else out there on the road, these are so weak that I'm constantly re-checking to see if my lights are really on!!! 13.4 volts on the system, too. :?

If you would like to fix this without creating new problems (for yourself or others on the road), that's entirely possible. PM sent.

Those are straight from somewhere in the middle of the mountain of fraudulent, unsafe garbage on the market. The ratio of junk to good stuff is enormous. Just disregard anything that was not made by one of the relatively few legitimate lighting suppliers—the ones who make lights for automakers. Some of their aftermarket stuff is good, and that's where there's discussion worth having.

Disregard anything—literally: everything—else. All the alphabet-soup brands on Amazon, the generic crap on eBay, the bullshіt marketing brands ("Octane", "Dapper", "Delta"), the hot rod/T-bucket/chrome shop house brands…every last little bit of it is rubbish without even a smidge of merit.

There is exactly one legitimate 7-inch round headlamp with a built-in turn signal on the market; it's this one. Cool multifunction packaging, but I don't count the low/high beams among the best. Some months from now that (American) maker will be introducing a whole range of all-new, better and less expensive LED sealed beams, including ones with inbuilt turn signal.

I have also noticed that a lot of newer cars turn off the headlamp when the turn signal is on, is that because the headlamp overwhelms the turn signal visibility or what.

Headlamps, no. Daytime running lights, yes. If you see someone's left light turn off when the left turn signal goes on at night, it's because they've failed to turn on their (nighttime) headlamps.

I have seen this too. That means the DRLs are as bright as one would expect headlamps to be...

Hopefully the prices will come down sometime? Some of the those headlights cost more than the cars I have owned. Either prices come down or I have to only drive in the day time! :D :D
