I had a problem with my engine where I had to use the now hard to find Aussie head gasket.
I only bored my block 0.020". The block wasn't where the problem was. It was the head.
I've heard of putting the head on the bare block and looking up from beneath to check out the centering of the combustion chamber over the bore hole. It was in Doug's book even
(Of which i got my copy, after the fact)
But on mine the problem was that when I ported my head I cleaned off a sharp burr around the edges of the combustion chamber and when I went to set my head gasket onto the head with the head still on the bench the fire ring stuck out a bit past the edge of the chamber which I didn't like. And it still would have had I not cleaned up that burr... I found several brands of /6 head gaskets, some from companies that no longer exist, such as ROL and Detroit gasket.. besides fel pro and victor. One of these was slightly larger on the fire ring than the others but still overhung. And since the fire ring might actually squash out a bit when torqued that would only make the "hangover" worse. So the only way I could find not to have the fire ring hang out into the cylinder bore area was to run the Aussie gasket. My engine is a measured out, 8.4:1 CR engine. And that was even after I took 0.030 off the block and 0.070 off of the head...
