Does anybody know how common a 24 tooth gear is on the input shaft of an 833 OD. Everything I've found so far is 22 tooth.

Also, if you have one see my ad in Parts Wanted.

Thanks

The 24 tooth input is for the "close ratio" (2.66 first) small spline (66-70) 833 4-speed. The 22 tooth is the "wide ratio" (3.09 first) version.

Thanks Doc

I guess I am mistaken that there is only one set of ratio's for the OD box? Is there anything else I need to be aware of while owning this case?

Dart,

I can tell y'all are talking cars from the speedo gear tooth count, and while Ido trucks there is a relevant other point. In older threads here is a link to a great little spreadsheet that lets you see tooth count change as you swap rear ends and tire diameter. My ideal is a 27 tooth, for instance and I got one some time ago off ebay. Before you toss a gear already in, see if you can match rear ends and tires to use what you already have. When I swap rear ends (banjos) I have to swap gears, and it is easy if you are already under the vehicle...if you don't do much swapping, probably better to leave your gear in. If you take it out, have the right O-Ring ( I use the big Pep Boys kit for about $12 for a mountain of rings) and be sure the dirt is cleaned off around the clamp before pulling, then be sure you have the right tooth count lined up at six o clock on the plug part, for good install practice.

Uh, Rock, he's talking about the actual tooth count of the 'direct' gear/3rd gear on the input shaft the tranny... each model has a different tooth count (that way you can't juts swap a hemi box counter shaft into an OD case with a 1964 A-833 mainshaft gear cluster from a Valiant).

Supposedly the count is: (main shaft/ counter shaft tooth count in 'Direct')
"Low Gear ratio"

2.44 - 22/26
2.47 - 25/30
2.65 - 21/27
2.66 - 24/31
3.09 - 22/33
3.09OD - 22/33

On the otherhand Rock is right, someone on the board might be able to use your old speedo gears especially the hard to find pre-66/67 for the early crowd, late crowd is lucky that these were used up to '96 or so...

Rob,

Uhhh, how embarassed can one be? Just misread a question and find out! I long ago learned Rob knows these trannys and this just further strengthens my belief! Last fall I was just about to pop in another input shaft for yuks, and realized I would need another cluster and figured that was getting out of yuk dollar range. Still I have the input, a case, some bearings, and only my real job in the way from stopping this kind of daydreaming! And I am one of the "early" crowd that will crawl on coals for your replaced gear!

Apologies for reading too fast..
