Well, don't beat your head up against the wall too hard. Sometimes you'll run into a carb that's just done and won't respond to your every effort to put it right. Brand-new (new old stock) 1945s go across eBay often enough that you can take your time and snag a nice one. Me, I prefer the Carter BBS, and the 1974 version of it has all the hookups you'd need for your car, but they aren't as easy to find.

I've been advised to stay on the hunt for a BBS, just to watch out for the common warped bowl/upper area because an ape tightened the screws. I saw a real nice brand new 1945 on eBay that you listed in another thread and that is one nice looking carb. I'd be all over it if I could afford it. For the time being I will try to end the car show season with the 1920 and tackle rebuilding this 1945 this fall.

Update: The accelerator pump in the 1945 is not ripped for once. Disassembled the entire carb and nothing really looks wrong. Floats don't appear to be soaking in gas, gaskets were matched hole for hole and don't show signs of leakage, etc. Jet was obviously too large, but that's all that I found was really an issue. While its apart anything special I should look for? Just seems like ive looked over everything and to have not found something makes me think I missed something...

Can't tell by looks; must check float weight.

There's a lot that could be wrong that can't be seen.

That manual looks familiar. I'll have to check around my files and see if I printed it off once before. Either way, helpful stuff.

I plan to get a brass float from Mike's when I eventually place my order, so for the time being I am not too terribly concerned with if it was leaking or is heavy.

Just figured I'd post an update once I had gotten the carb apart! :D

Well everyone, unsuccessful update. I rebuilt the 1945 carb. Verified accelerator pump stream on the bench, put it together piece by piece and installed it on the car.

And the car ran, smoked, and sounded like a John Deere.

My god that was awful. It wouldn't idle at a constant speed to save it's life and the accelerator pump stream became a mist of gas and an occasional short stream of gas. Sprayed all around it for leaks, nothing found. Set mixture and the best I got was 17" of vacuum at idle. Dropped it in gear, went to take off, instant stall. Restarts fine, but even in park if you nudge the gas it struggles to stay alive.

Dropped the 1920 back on and fired it up. Idles like silk now and accelerates again! Think it's time to save up for that brand new 1945 (not a reman POS) I saw on eBay awhile back.

Sometimes carbs just won't be dragged back from the brink.

Kind of seems like that's where this one has headed. Oh well back to tuning the 1920 for now!
