Had very nice weather on Sunday for T&T at Mason Dixon. I only got to make 2 runs because there were plenty of cleanups going on!! Anyway I removed the 4.56's and installed my 3.91's in the car. The changes made were @ 12" header extensions, new M/T drag radials in the same 26" tall that I had before. Poly rear bushings and an extra leaf in the rear springs. So the only large change was the 3.91's So the car ran almost exactly the same times as it did last Fall with the 4.56's! I am running the same 600 carb and timing was still at 28, and I shifted at 6100 RPM. Density Altitude was @ 760' and we had a 7 mile an hour head wind (So that didn't help) For the second run I just bumped the timing to 30 degrees and I decided to shift at 6400 RPM. The time was ever so slightly faster, but not much. D.A. was @ 850 on this run, and we still had that head wind. Here are the specifics: Run #1 - 60' 1.88---330-5.471---1/8-8.552---1000'-11.259--1/4- 13.583---96.55 MPH Run #2 - 60' 1.84--------5.436-------- 8.504----------11.200-------13.522---96.61 I had hoped to have a 750 to try and run on it but I was having accelerator pump troubles and could not get them sorted out Saturday. I really suspected that the 3.91's would have made more of a difference. And I don't know how much a 7 MPH headwind is worth? Rick |

Nice restults. 7 MPH headwind is worth a bit, esp on 1/4 mile. Maybe 0.1-0.2? Good air otherwise, though! Lou |

I wonder if Project V might now be a good even race with the Covalt machine?? I am waffling on which car to bring, so that might tilt in favor of bringing my Valiant... Of course, the 68 Dart is not technically running yet either. Lou |

Hey Rick, How do your 60 foot times compare between the two gear sets, and what sort of RPM's did you have going through the traps? -Matt |

I've not seen it, but thanks. Is it worth buying? Probably should get a copy.60' with the 3.91's is very close to the same as with the 4.56's. Trap RPM with the 4.56's was about 6000-6100. I didn't look at it Sunday with the 3.91's because I was looking at the A/F gauge. Probably around 57-5800. |

I think there are 4-6 pictures of your car. The book covers all valiants, darts, e body's and f body's. I bought 2.. one for me and one for my dad. Greg |

Long lost engine found! Well maybe not. Not really lost. No one was really looking either! Short story. My aunt owned my Valiant. And when she bought it my dad told her to keep a check on the oil because it used oil. She didn't and I ended up with the car in 1976 for $52. (the price of 2 new tires she had just put on it) So dad and I dragged it home and put it in my grandmother's garage where we swapped in another engine. Fast forward 42 years and my brother says to me, "hey there is a slant 6 out in Grandma's garage, it must be yours!"( He purchased grandma's house after she died) I said that I didn't know why I would have an engine in grandma's garage! Then I remembered that we had swapped the original engine out of the car in that very garage! |
