Here is what needs to happen for a SL6 (or any carburated engine for that matter) to come off idle and accelerate with-out a flat spot or bog.

The idle must be stable and the initial timing set somewhere in the 5 to 15 btdc range.

When you hit the gas, two things need to happen:
-Accelerator pump give the engine an extra shot of fuel.
-Vacuum advance pod gives the engine 10 to 20 degrees of timing advance.

Both these things need to happen right when you "crack-open" the throttle blade.

Once this transition has happened, the carburator goes into it's main fuel feed circuit and the distributor's mechanical advance comes in to give the engine more advance as RPMs increase.

It sounds like you are closing-in on the problem, no vacuum advance and / or a weak accelerator pump "shot".

Let's be sure we are working with a Carter BBS type carb. and that you are using the correct "ported vacuum" port. Test the port to be sure you are getting a vacuum signal right when you start to open the throttle.

Also check the timing mark with the vacuum pod disconnected and while slowly reving-up the engine. The timing mark should advance as you do this. (mechanical advance is working).

carb is a carter 2259(or possibly 8 im having trouble reading the numbers)

i do not have a meter to measure vacuum
but i know that when i have the timing light on the car it def. doesnt advance 10-15 deg more like 5 deg maybe :? thats no good is it?

i just put a new pod on it so i doubt thats bad is there an adjustment on the pod so that it takes less vacuum to operate??

what about dwell im unsure of what this really is but i have heard of guys adjusting it on the advance pod

car is harder to start when timed at 8 deg btdc

is there a way to adjust the accel to give more squirt ?

thanks for the help guys

If you set the initial timing at 8 BTDC and it gets harder to start I would re-suggest that your timing (cam/crank) is funny. I'd check that. It only takes 2 hours to 3 with proper tools and you can be sure and even fix the trouble in a wink.

Mine gets hardar to start at about 17° BTDC but still starts after 2 "heavy" turns.

Also another way of checking your timing would be (with a fairly stock engine) put the damper on TDC, then take out the valvle cover and see if cyl #6 intake rocker is down and how down is it. Actually it would be better if you take out the cover first so you can see how's cyl#6 intake progressin as you're reachin TDC. if at TDC is barely depressed, or anywhere lifting up again, your timing chain has jumped.
