OK, here is what was causing the jerking motion. It was the vacuum can on the distributor. It was turned almost all the way to the right (clockwise). I had to turn it out about 5 turns or so for it to disappear. Thanks everyone for your input. BTW, I went ahead and rechecked all my vacuum and snugged up carb bolts/screws while I was at it. Now I just need to save up for the body work.

...well, you get the prize. Seems to me you kinda suspected that from the beginning. So this was really just an exercise in jaw-jacking. ;)

I know how those rigged up ones are. A lot of times, the rigging just works by some kind of dumb-luck, and you can never seem to get things to work right again when you re-do it the "right way"!

I like well-weathered and worn but unmessed with originals over ones that have been "fixed" over the years by morons...

I did suspect it. However, I couldn't really explain it. I could if my vacuum from that port on the carb was alternating but not if it was steady. So, I figured I'd see if anyone here could help since they have always been so great. Most of the suggestions pointed to vacuum too so that at least kept me in the right direction. I am guessing this will probably give me better mileage too? That will be interesting to see. Thanks again everyone.

You're right about the rigging. What always kills me is people can drive these wrecks without even changing oil and they last forever. I take care of my cars and sometimes have problems.
