Post subject:  Spring change...

Just to let you know the MP uses a 10R governor (20 degrees total mech. adv.), the one I got to disassemble also ran 20 degrees of vac. adv., but I don't have my notes to say when it kicked in/cut out...it should be installed at 10 BTDC...but it only has one light spring as it's meant for drag racing (all mech advance in by 1200 rpm....)....

If you find one, you might have to add another spring to bring the advance in later for street driving, the light spring tended to make the timing bounce all over the place at idle.

good luck,

FYI, a common Mopar rear end gear ratio is 2.76

As for the high speed bouncing, sometime that is caused by the weights hitting the ends of the govenor slots. I like to set a real heavy spring with a loop to stop the mechaincal advance, instead of letting the weights hit and bounce off the ends of the slots.

I had my dist. set up years ago with one heavy spring and one light one as Doug mentioned. Then I changed over to the electronic dist. and it ran like s**t. Doug checked it out and found out Ihad too much advance. The gov. was a 15, so I switched the springs from my old dist. Then we ran the motor and set the timing to a max of 30 (if I remember correctly) when running at about 2500 RPM. Runs great with that setting.

Post subject:  MP Electronic Distributor

DI, are you saying that the MP distributor's mechanical advance is all in by 1200 crankshaft RPM? It sounds more like distributor RPM. If that's the case, it really is coming in at 2400 RPM at the crankshaft, which is what I would expect, even in a drag racing distributor.

I had a problem with the distributor on my 65 Barracuda several years ago and put in that MP distributor now that I checked my records. I didn't check the vacuum advance back then but the mechanical advance seemed to come in around 2500 RPM as I recall. It's been years since I checked so I could be wrong in my recollection, though.
