Lookiong at pictures of mufflers won't really accomplish anything—they all look pretty much alike.

The most important thing to do is to find a good, competent, cooperative exhaust shop. Not a Midas or Meineke or Muffler King chain shop, but an independent place with technicians who will listen to what you want, follow your instructions, and not try to fast-talk you into what they happen to want to sell.

A very good, plenty big and inexpensive system for a street-driven slant-6 car with stock exhaust manifold is a 2¼" headpipe running to a premium-quality Walker or Goerlich brand stock replacement muffler for a 1976 Dodge Dart with 360 V8 engine, and an appropriately-sized tailpipe, with the muffler placed in the stock location.

If you go with Flowmasters, DO NOT go with duals, unless you like it loud.

My car now sets off car alarms, it's so loud (at least at certain RPMs).

I love the sound, but as a practical matter, I have to be very careful when and where I step on it, otherwise any police officer within a mile radius will be looking for me.

Luckily, they'll probably be looking for a Toyota Supra with open pipes, since that's what my car sounds like now!!!

Well, now this crap's got me concerned; I was ready to throw a set of 400 series on along with 2&1/4" unbalanced duals all the way back but if it's going to sound like a damn ricer, forget it.

, the hotter is the exhaust flowing through it, which means the greater its volume. The greater the volume through the muffler, the greater the muffling effect.
do you mean "volume" as in quantity of gas or "volume" as in sound pressure level.

Whoops, yeah, good point. Volume of gas. Hotter gas is more voluminous than cooler gas.

Has anybody here ever used Thrush mufflers?

What about Magnaflows, I found one of them at the dumpster the other day.

I had a Magnaflo on my '62. It had a nice, rappy growl at idle and up through the gears. Problem is, it also had a BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMing resonant drone at between 54 and 66 mph. Adding a resonator did not kill it. That muffler had to go.

hi. www.accurateltd.com i had tom basically build me a 340 v-8 a-body system for the drivers side with a different 3 foot front pipe that was bent to fit a slant. 2.25 to the tailpipe tip with a highflow turbo muffler. my ex manifold was also hogged out to over 2.125 past the heat riser to outlet for max flow. i have used his systems more on v-8 cars ,but he will build them for slants.he has cars to use as jigs for exact fit. nothing mickey-moused. he is a sponser on moparts.com with excellent feedback and is easy to deal with. he loves mopars and builds big-block mopar a-bodys for a hobby. i also considered his 2.50 system but felt it was too big for my intended use. ron
