No, your truck doesn't have a balast resistor, and if you are swapping to hei, then you don't want one. You should replace the coil with one that is intended to work with the hei unit, not a mopar coil.

I expect that you've replaced your lean burn distributor with an older model with a vacuum pod and mechanical advance right?

I don't recall the link to the HEI conversion stuff, but I do have a little info about the Mopar EI conversion. Perhaps it will help in part in conjunction with the information you are already using.

I'm concerned that you are changing so many things at one time. I wish you luck and will offer any other input I can, but you've really opened the 10lb can of worms. I'll do a little more searching and see if I can help.

Post subject:  hei wiring.

i hooked up the hei ignition but i need some help with the start wire, witch one under the hood can i use for the start wire? i tried the big yellow one off the relay but i think it is an always on hot when the key is switched. would this work to use the small wire going to the starter as a tie in wire? i think the truck will start now if i can get this hooked up to the right wire.

Post subject:  The final pieces of the puzzle

Image

The 'start' wire can connect to the tab labeled 'BAL' on this pic.(it may be stamped on the part if you clean it off a little) Careful because the diagram and the image are rotated about 180 degrees from each other. This is the starter relay that was on my truck, I hope it is the same for yours. That 'BAL' terminal was not used with the computerized ignition, so you will have to add a wire and fabricate a connector. My truck had an empty blank connector that coved it.

This will give you power only when the key is in the 'start' position, but isolated from everything in the 'run' position.

Took me a year to finally get it figured out. I had to pull one apart to verify that it was isolated, and then today I found this image with the diagram. :D

Hope this gets you started.

Post subject:  still won't start

well i got the hei hooked up, put in a 78 vacuum advance distributer, and it still won't start! the only possible thing i can think of to be wrong is the ignition timing. does any one have any ideas for this ongoing problem? :(
