Slant Six Forum :: Insurance?

Down here in Virginia, I had very good agents with Allstate that kept appriasals and photos of my '71 Plymouth on file.

Abruptly a few years ago, Allstate suddenly changed their policy, fired my agents, discarded all the records on my car, and made it quite clear they didn't want to insure it (other than for liability) any more (they said they'd "tell me what it's worth" after an accident).

As it's a show car, driven very little, and parked in a garage, I went with Hagarty, and have been quite pleased with them. It was far less inexpensive and far less hassle.

In VA, all regularly driven cars must have a yearly state inspection done by local private for-profit repair places; I've been often quite distressed at the poor treatment my cars received from the inspectors. It took me years to find a honest & trustworthy shop.

Recently, to avoid the hassle and hazards of yearly state inspections, I've gone to retricted use, antique plates for my '71. I did find that I had to drill holes in the black VA antique plates to make them fit.

I have two cars insured with Haggerty. I think the rates are ok. Haven't had a claim, so don't know how they are about paying. One thing I do like, they do not have a fixed mileage restriction. It just can't be used for a daily driver. They did ask my estimated mileage per year. I said about 7,000 each, and they didn't question it.

I have filed a claim with Hagerty and in two weeks I had a check in my hand with no penalty. All they asked for was pictures of the damage and the estimate that I got from the body shop that I wanted to do the work. I also informed them that I would rather do the work as I am the one that built the car and they agreed to that also. I had to get the estimate so they would know what to pay.

...I'm telling you, if you can limit your mileage and have a secure garage to park your car in, go with antique/collector insurance. You'd be amazed how cheap it is. The rate is based on the car's value, so if that value is, say $5000 (the minimum you can insure for, in a lot of instances), the rate could be as low as $50/year for full coverage. D/W

Our govt insurance company MAKES money. Some people think it makes too much money. It gives you a idea how much the private companies make when Alberta rates are double ours. Our right wing provincial govr wants to sell out to the privates and the public wont let them for the obvious reasons. Our household drives 120000 miles a year. I dont think collector insurance would worrk on the Valaint that drives 50 miles a day to work. Getting Collector Plates here is a huge deal. Lots of pics and an appraisal.

That's funny--collector plates here are just your word that you drive it to functions related to shows, clubs, etc. Basically not a daily driver. I think 50 miles a day on the valiant probably wouldn't qualify unless there's a show at the end of the day Registration is great--1 time fee of like $30 or so. Gotta love that! MJ

I insured my '66 Dart with my insurance carrier for my other vehicles (American Family). American Family ask that I have the car appraised and I did (valued at 3000). Full coverage for a year is 120 dollars. No mileage restriction. I also insure 4 other vehicles with them. Todd

I just recently moved from my parents car insurance plan to my own with Allstate, and when talking about my two cars (a 76 Valiant and 65 Barracuda) he said that they have an arrangement to insure certain cars with Hagarty. He even mentioned it was cheaper then regular coverage.
