A really neat setup would be a 6AL unit, plus a programmable timing computer so you can get rid of those unreliable inexact mech advance counterweights inside your dist. You may wanna intall also the timing variator control, is a treat, you can actually control the timing of your car from inside the car while you're driving. It varies 15 degrees with a clicking knob that is to be installed on the dash. Crank triggered distributorless sys would be a great upgrade too, just in case you wanna add some multiport fuel injection and/or turbo later. Hey, you can even go 1 coil per cylynder with that crank triggered thing.

hey shamc, forgot to tell you that I got my MSD 6AL on ebay for 120 bux. It's even a vintage "Mopar Performance" relabeled unit. Perform a search on the site using "mopar ignition" and that should do it. Good luck.

shamhC: I'll give you my opinion on the original question instead of mocking you.

I have used both a 6A and a 6AL. An MSD 6 series ignition is an MSD 6 series ignition. One is not necessarily 'better' than the other. As has already been said, the only real difference between the 6A and the 6AL is the 6AL has a built-in rev limiter. The rpm limit is adjusted by removable 'chips'.

The other differences are minor. The 6A is slightly smaller, and can be hooked up to any 4, 6, or 8 cylinder engine without modifications. The 6AL requires you to cut one wire to 'set' it for a 6 cylinder engine, or two wires for a 4 cylinder engine. Once you cut the wire, you can't go back.

If you are set on an MSD, the 6A will do fine for you. A rev limiter is a nice feature, but not really needed for a street rig.

I'll get flamed for this, but I'll say it anyway. In no way does standard electronic ignition come close to an MSD ignition IMO. I ran standard electronic ignition on my truck for a little over a week before I replaced it with an MSD. Mopar EI, while a definite improvment over the original lean burn ignition on my truck, did not help my idle quality (intermittent misfire on #1 and/or #5) nor hard starting problems. Since installing the MSD, both cold and hot starting are greatly improved. My slant will catch within a second of the starter engaging. My idle misfire 'mysteriously' disappeared. Those two items by themselves were enough to convince me the MSD was worth every penny.

I'm also looking into the 6AL (I also think there's some clones made by competing companies).

The think I like about the limiter is it will keep me from over-revving if I "accidently" floor the car on wet pavement, etc...

Right now, I've got the Pertronix points eliminator kit.

But the Pertronix and 6AL are not mutually exclusive.

The Pertronix lets me get rid of my points (no more tricky dwell adjustment). And if I got the 6AL, I would get multiple spark discharge (MSD?) at low RPMs, plus probably a hotter spark (which probably is not needed with my mild build up).

I personally like the 6AL. I have used one for years now with no troubles. I also have a 3 step hooked into it for my bracket racing.

I saw the difference for myself between a Mopar ignition with an orange box and the MSD on my first hot rod Slant. Whenever it got below 45* it would foul the 1 and 6 plugs at startup. I changed plugs, carbs, wires, distributors, boxes, and even manifolds and nothing helped. Put the MSD on it and problem solved. I even drove it to work one day when it was -7* without a choke. (Too bad the heater didn't work as well as the MSD)

I sure as hell wouldn't try spraying on a stock ignition either, but that's just me. :shock:

For the record, I wasn't mocking anybody. I have my MSD 6AL and no one would ever come near to convince me that MSD performs even near other systems. Maybe I got a li'l carried away, but I trully would love to have those MSD add-ons. I love to play with timing and find diffrent dialings. Heck, even altitude and weather produces changes in engine vac reading, so I's love to have the clicking knob in my dash. I don't think that a 1coil per cyl setup is undoable... as a matter of fact I'm working on a distributorless prototype, in order to facilitate a later MP EFI conversion.

Shamc, rev limiter is fine if you need to leave your car to a valet parking or at the mechanich's, you can always throw in a 1.8k rpm cookie and make sure that they can't abuse your car. or if you borrow her to a friend, maybe a 3k rpm or 3.5 k rpm cookie can assure you that she's gonna be treated right. Or if your throttle return spring breaks (happened to me)

A relatively stock motor, no. Anything with a good cam and valvesprings, yes.

Electromotive already makes a coil pack system that can easily be adapted to a Slant. :shock:

What are you running for a oil pump??? My car tears up the pump
gears over 6100 !!

Melling M-66C. Not a high voluum pump. Old Racer Brown cam, and 10-30 oil. 50 psi oil pressure at 1000 rpm idle, and 60 psi over 1500 rpm.

Ok. So how hard are these msd6al's to install, can you use your factory distributor or is there anything else you need to use with it or purchase to install it???

If I may say so, very easy. The only problem I had was that the engine keep on running after I shut of the ignition. One diode at the alternator made that problem disappear.
