Actually the cam lift specs take into consideration the rockerarm, so .414 (or whatever) is .414 at the valve..........................

Only when your looking at individual lobe specs do you need to multiply the rockerarm ratio

Don't believe that's how Chrysler published their cam specs, which tended to give the cam lift at the lobe, and the rocker ratio.

It doesn't state the lobe lifts, but it does state

Valves-Intake
Lift .375"

Valves-Exhaust
Lift .360"

Hey emsvitil, If you take that information and then add the 1.5 rocker ratio, you'd come out to a lift of .562" on the intake and .540" on the exhaust. I don't think so! My heated up 383 doesn't even come close to that kind of lift. You need to look at a cam card to understand. So what the service manual says is what it's actually lifting as the motor runs.

i have no knowledge of the rules of timing, but i do know when i retard my timing the engine sounds like it has a lot more beef to it. when i advance it she sounds more like she is ready to shut off.

how does the slant six change as you move in front of or behind tdc?

Not sure what kind of "beefy" sounds you're reacting to, but engine sound isn't a reliable way to gauge how well the engine runs or how much power it makes.

It sounds like you're wanting to get up to speed on some of the basic operating principles of engines and cars in general, and the specific mechanisms on your car in particular. Recommend you read this thread and purchase the linked books (substituting a '75 Dodge and Dart or Plymouth and Valiant factory service manual because that's what you have).
