I'm by no means professing to be a carb expert, quite the contrary actually. I do not rebuild my own carburetors. I can only speak from my own experience.

When I say the Holley Economaster resembled the Carter BBs I only mean the linkeage. Since I have never seen a 1920 with exact linkeage for a 63 Dart with rod linkeage when I compared the carbs I only meant that the linkeage matched up right out of the box. I have several other 1920's on my shelf, all built for cable linkeage. My bad, if anyone has a 1920 that was specifically made to fit my application, I'd have gladly gone with that.

And yes, the rebuilt Carter BBS on my 65 sweptline was obviously not rebuilt properly, not surprising since I had the job done in NC. with no previous knowledge of the level of expertise at that particular shop, just trying to get the truck fit for the road for the 400 mile trip north.

A single barrel carb is just that, nothing fancy, it is either working properly or not irregardless of the manufacturer, none of them were built for ultimate performance.

I graciously bow to the superior knowledge of others here.

AH! Gotchya. Yeah, they made both Carters and Holleys with the box-shaped throttle lever to accept the early rotating-rod throttle system. Sounds like you did get a 1920 Economaster.

No NC conotations or judgements intended, I simply was not familiar with any service centers in the Charlotte area so I rolled the dice. Actually in their defense, the garage was called Amity Service Center did a good job of getting her roadable for me, just kinda missed the fact that the fuel pump was failing and the starter was intermittent, both items had to be replaced on my back in a Virginia Advance Auto lot....... I laugh now.....that damned 4 speed standard starter was heavy....

Anywhoo, I'm not really biased either way on carbs, but I do know even with the Carters if they are rebuilt it needs to be a good job.

That goes for any carb. There's nothing mysterious about a Carter. If anything, they are more straightforward.

so before i discovered this site i bought a 75 dart that needed a new carb and i just replaced the holley 1945 in my innocence. why does everyone have bad things to say about this carb? does it break down, malfunction, or just give half a** performance. also, how long do they typically last?

Problem solved!!!!! just exchange my Holley 1920 for a "new" Holley 1920, I hope new owner of my previous carb got more lucky
