When I put the distributer in I believe it had a 7.5 on the bottom of the mechanical advance plate. which would give me 15* mechanical and 11* inital for only 26* total but I will take it all back appart and double check one of these days. This having to work almost every other weekend really puts a dent in my car working time. This weekend will be devoted to replacing the transmission. I would love to pick up a full second in the 1/4 but I'm not holding my breath. Though I felt I should have been in the 15's this past spring. |

The only way to confirm total advance is to get a timing light and check it. The dial-back "advance" timing lights are really convenient for this and Craftsman has a good one for $60 or so. I wouldn't trust any markings on the distributor personally as something could be broken or parts replaced. BTW, I shift my street car motor at 5800. Pretty built up, though. My racecar motor, not as built at the moment, I shift at 5200. Lou |

My engine would fall out @ 4500 rpm. I changed the distributor (got one from Guy - 20* mech), set the timing @ 8* initial, and converted to GM HEI. Then I was shifting @ 5000. Now I have a new valve head with 1.78/1.50 valves. I haven't been to the track yet, but on the street it's pulling up to 5500. |

In traffic I shift when the tach hits 2300...this is pretty nice and allows for the log bogger drop between the 1st and 2nd gear (3.09 to 1.67).... When out 'testing' I usually launch at 6000, nail 2nd and 3rd @ 5000 (about all the time you have left to build up to that rpm when trying to get to 3rd quickly during a simulated 1/4 miler).... The comp cam 252 pulls really nicely with the stock valves and valve train from idle to 5500 rpm (can't tell much difference between 5500 and 6000...of course I ran out of road trying to push the limit @ 4000 rpm in OD....but it was still pulling...) -D.Idiot |
