Well I finally got to opening up the other 1920 that was giving me trouble.

And this is what I saw:

Is the spring supposed to look like that? I've never done this before so I just don't know.

I've taken a bunch of other pictures, so if you see something you need to see more of, let me know and I'll pop it up here.

There's a tiny hole in the stainless-steel float arm, into which the spring's top spike is supposed to fit. From that photo, it looks as if your spring might not be quite properly placed.

Other than that, when I go in to ask for a rebuild kit, do I simply tell them the year and make of the car and the engine, or do i need a number off of the carb itself?

It helps to have the carb number. There are all sort of discrepencies in carb models, such as high altitude setups, Cleaner Air Package, and all sorts of weird things. I always like to come prepared with as much information as possible.

OK, your float counterspring is installed correctly. The carb number is stamped on the carb near the top-right-front area, and looks like "R7584S" or "R3887SA" (these are example numbers). Couldn't hurt to get a new float, too!

So far the only quality kit I've found in town is the Borg-Warner Kit # 10392A...This will cover all Holley 1920 models from 1966-1973.

Good to know, thanks DI. And I'm still looking for that durned number. All I've found so far are a couple of numbers like 12r-4325b. Things like that.

I think that was the number from the carb I replaced this one with.

But you can see where it is in the picture.

Naw, that's a casting number. Look on the top and front surfaces of the part of the casting indicated by the green arrows:

These are the only numbers up there, I'm going to get some berryman's cleaner and soak this puppy and see if any numbers turn up under the grease. This is one that i found just from a little cleaning this afternoon.

Still no numbers visible. its soaking in B12 at the moment since the parts store didn't have the B9 schtuff. Will this clean it adequately?

The carb number you are looking for is the "list" number. This is found on a little stamped aluminium tab which is held in place by one of the float bowl screws. Yours appears to be missing. The other numbers are casting numbers and won't correspond to a carb rebuild kit.

Any decent carb rebuild kit will be generic and contain a number of different gaskets for the slight variation amongst carb models. Just be careful in selecting which gaskets to use and you will be fine.
