I thought that the ram effect simply had to do with the volume of air moving into the cylinder due to inertia.

Exactly........

But the cross-sectional area (and volume) is so large in this contraption, that there would hardly be any inertia at all since the flow would be going so slow.

You get the ram effect when the runners are small in diameter so that there is appreciable flow and inertia.

It's the header principle on the intake side.

But if a one inch carb spacer can increase torque, why wouldn't a 13 inch spacer have some benefit as well? (Note this comment is made half-jokingly)

I just talked to a guy who used 2 of those on a 440 about 20 years ago, and they did work, but getting a good idle was out of the question.
Cold starts were no fun either...
Not sure if it was the spacer effect, or ram effect that gave him the extra power but he would not use them on the street :?

it would probably work great to center and move back the carb so you can run cowl induction and it appear to be a V-8 setup. GRT

So the consensus is that this is not a good idea for a street driven vehicle and the beneficial effect would be minimal and offset by increased cold driveability problems?

When it comes to my engine, I follow the Bauhaus school philosophy of "form follows function."

I prefer the Ed Roth school of design.

You need individual runners to get the harmonic resonance that makes "ram tuning" work. When all the harmonic pulses get combined into a common area, they cancel each other out.

For a street driven Slant, smaller manifold volumes are preferred, large open manifolds kill low speed performance.
