The inspectors for my emissions tests were not of the "didn't know any better" type. They were actually quite thorough--actually pulling vacuum lines and individually testing for proper vacuum in each line (they found the BB I had in one line to disable the EGR), and they most definitely would have noticed the 2 bbl carburetor. They had zero problems with the MSD and standard EI distributor.

I failed visual (only) more than once for different items, one being a charcoal canister that I had placed an in-line fuel filter to to prevent broken charcoal from entering the carb. Passed the sinffer with flying colors, but was failed until the charcoal canister was replaced.

Also failed visual with my EGR flipped 180* due to it no longer functioning properly. Sniffer was close on that one, but passed.

There were only two I/M stations left in Fairbanks that did tests on carbureted vehicles when I moved out of state, and that is almost exclusively what they dealt with. Definitely not 20 year olds that had never seen a carb.

I am merely trying to give 87ram150 some options. Yes, he should check the legality with his local DMV, or even emissions inspection stations before spending any money. I know MSD worked for me. My $0.02

OK, my point is those are the inspectors you got in your particular area. That does not mean your mod is emissions legal...just that you got away with it! :-)

Well, sad news today...

Earlier this evening my front right brake rotor siezed up. Overheated so bad that steam shot out when we opened up the bleeder valve. Have no honest clue how it happened. The brakes were always crisp and responsive and the whole condition developed over the course of half an hour and five miles! After letting it cool for an hour we managed to pry the pads off the rotor and make the caliper piston retreat some, then we shot with brakleen and bled the line to be safe. It made it the two-three miles home, and tomorrow I'll coax it across town to my grandparents' house where all the good tools are!

Anyways, while the wheel was off, noticed the rotor was slightly scoured, and the pads were almost gone. So when I get back from bootcamp in October, my first couple of hundred dollars will replace all three brake hoses, both front calipers, rotors, and pads...

But by the time I finish that and put a stereo CD player in the dash, my two weeks of leave will be up and hopefully I'll get deployed to rural Texas, or somewhere else in the deep South, where I can get under that hood and rip out half that BS and have something more along the lines of a computer-less early 70s 225 like my friend's '72 Duster...

One last thing, the metal tag we were able to find on the rear differential had "320" stamped into it. Was this the rearend gearing or a stock number?

Thanks for the help, and I'll still keep HEI in mind.

-Eli

Mopar Muscle magazine had a '87D150 slant six project back in '96.

Here's a link to part 5.

Part 2 has the info you may be most interested in.

Am I missing something, I went thru the articles and couldn't find the following:

what transmission did they use
if auto, is there a shift kit

what camshaft
what valves (bigger?)
what compression ratio
any milling (head and/or block)
porting
intake manifold

etc......

all I found was 'we but in a 175hp slant 6' but not how they got 175hp....

I don't know. I thought it was in the links, I didn't check them all. The issue with the motor build was April '99 (not'96). The motor article was written a bit like the '62 Valiant engine build, http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/proj ... six_part2/ , although not quite as detailed.

The truck motor used a Crane hyd cam, 216/220 @ .050, .454/.467, custom .040 JE pistons for 10:1 comp ratio, Hooker headers, Mopar Performance M-1 intake, Holley 2300 series 350 carb and 2300 to BBD adapter, Mopar Performance ported head with 1.70/1.44 valves, MSD ignition.

Problem is, some of these parts are no longer available. Crane no longer sells slant six cams, Mopar performance no longer has the ported head and M-1 intake. Good news is there are equal, or better, substitutes to be had.
