There's a coil (or half a coil if using wasted spark) per spark plug.


The coil(s) can be centralized in same location (and look like 1 big coil) or placed near the spark plugs.

That's the system in use on most, if not all, the newer engines. The 4.7 SOHC Magnum and the new "Hemi" are both set up that way and I believe the newer 4 cylinder and V6s are as well. They've been using a crank trigger to generate timing signals for years so it was only a matter of time until someone decided that a mechanical distributor was an unnecessary piece of hardware. Ford and GM have been using coil packs on the spark plugs for several years.
