DIS Distriborless Ignition System There's a coil (or half a coil if using wasted spark) per spark plug. The coil(s) can be centralized in same location (and look like 1 big coil) or placed near the spark plugs. |

That's the system in use on most, if not all, the newer engines. The 4.7 SOHC Magnum and the new "Hemi" are both set up that way and I believe the newer 4 cylinder and V6s are as well. They've been using a crank trigger to generate timing signals for years so it was only a matter of time until someone decided that a mechanical distributor was an unnecessary piece of hardware. Ford and GM have been using coil packs on the spark plugs for several years. |
