Of course, there are surface-fire plugs out there with a center electrode and a ring-shaped ground. So in theory, that'd be a plug with an infinite number of electrodes. Never heard anyone claim those perform very well, though.
I used to run them in an old Mercury inline six outboard. They were specced by the manufacturer to allow the piston to come up really close to the combustion chamber surface. These two stroke engines had no cylinder head, the combustion chamber was cast into the cylinder block. The piston tops had a crazy looking deflector to enhance swirl.
I can tell you this though, those plugs were impossible to foul, and you could never over choke the engine and not have it start.
They were pretty cool old engines, 150 hp from 99 cubic inches....

Regards, Andrew.

Check out the new Hot Rod mag for a quick blip about Indy car plugs. It's in the front where they have little part page articles on different things. Anyways, they use a setup with a ring like you are referencing.

Not saying these E3 plugs are similar, only pointing out a ring style plug that somebody must figure works.

On the other hand it might be due to a needed reduction in combustion space that is driving this style of plug, not the efficiency of the design itself.
